Interim R&D Accounting Manager

Our client (a biopharmaceutical company) is seeking an experienced Interim R&D Accounting Manager to join their team. This role involves overseeing the R&D-related accounting close process, collaborating with R&D teams in Shanghai and the United States.

This is a fully remote opportunity.

Responsibilities :

Manage the monthly R&D-related accounting close, ensuring accurate and timely completion of expenses, prepayments, deposits, and accrual accounts.

This includes communication with R&D teams in Shanghai and quarterly sessions with the U.S. team.

• Perform detailed accruals, prepaids reconciliations, and other tasks using manual processes in Excel.
• Attend R&D project team meetings to understand the status of the company’s R&D programs and facilitate the R&D accrual process.
• Review and prepare journal entries, ensuring compliance with SOX 404B requirements.
• Analyze invoices, contracts, and data to determine appropriate accounting treatments.
• Prepare R&D contract accounting analysis for accruals and prepaids.
• Develop and maintain R&D accruals using various methodologies.
• Conduct R&D fluctuation analysis by segments and general ledger account analysis.
• Liaise between R&D project teams and FP&A regarding monthly R&D Research accruals.
• Support audits, tax requirements, and drive closure of requests.

Education, Experience & Skills Requirements :

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA preferred but not required.
• 6+ years of progressive experience (nice to have public accounting / Big 4 background, biotech or biopharma client experience in auditing R&D accounts, and clinical stage biotech / pharma industry experience required for contract role).
• Experience with NetSuite (nice to have for booking entries); experience with FloQast is also a plus.
• Ability to quickly follow programs, templates, and processes for efficient execution.
• Strong work ethic and ability to handle different R&D programs in a complex, fast-paced environment.
• Results-oriented mindset with an eye toward process improvements.
