At Houston Methodist the Registered Nurse(RN) PRN position is a licensed staff nurse an experiencedclinician functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Bennersmodel of clinical practice.

The RN PRN position providesprofessional nursing care to a diverse patient population conductsnursing assessments assists with exams and treatment patienteducation and maintenance of medical records.

The RN PRN positionprovides direct patient care effectively and efficiently which mayinclude patients with varied and complex needs.

This positioncommunicates and collaborates with the physicians andinterprofessional health care team to facilitate coordinate andmaintain compassionate efficient quality care and achievement ofdesired treatment outcomes.

The RN PRN position demonstratesclinical competence when providing care using technologyadministering medications performing procedures and managingemergencies acting as a patient and family advocate in order tomonitor and maintain patient rights.

This position assumesleadership roles with progressive responsibility including but notlimited to participating in or leading unit and shared governanceinitiatives serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or newemployees and possibly contributing to service line or hospitalwideinitiatives in partnership with management.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Uses therapeuticcommunication which includes active listening and teaching toestablish a relationship with patients families andinterprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan ofcare.
  • Contributes toteamwork by awareness of overall unit acuity consistently offeringassistance and responding positively to requests for assistance.

Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the workenvironment. Seeks guidance from and offers guidance tointerprofessional health care team when appropriate and appliesfeedback to improve patientoutcomes.

Implements staffeducation specific to patient populations and unit processes;coaches and mentors other staff and students.

May includepreceptorship. Uses peertopeer accountability towards improvementof department score for turnover / retention / employee engagement onunitbasedscorecard.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Followsthe patient and familycentered care standards as outlined in theHouston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Conductsnursing assessments assists with exams and treatment andmaintenance of medical records. Practices in a manner that iscongruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.

Developsupdates and communicates plan of care including discharge inpartnership with the patient family and interprofessional healthcare team using the nursing process.

Prioritizes care based on thepatients needs abilities and preferences. Advocates onpatient / familys behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethicalconcerns utilizing appropriateresources.

Providespatient teaching based on learning needs uses appropriate resourcesincorporating planning for care after discharge.

Consistentlyevaluates the patients comprehension and adapts teaching methodsaccordingly.

Helps driveimprovement of department score for patient satisfaction onunitbased scorecard through peertopeer accountability to servicestandards.

  • Followsthe standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practicedocument.
  • Follows thestandards related to regulatory requirements and professionalpractice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional NursingPractice document.

Identifies areas of practice improvements withresearchbased evidence to achieve core measure and patient safetyoutcomes supported by accuratedocumentation.

Providesand modifies care to complex patients and coordinates care with theinterprofessional team based on evaluation of the patientscondition supported by accurate documentation.

Utilizes clinicaljudgement using an evidencebased analyticalapproach.

Improves qualityand safety scores on the unitbased scorecard through peertopeeraccountability reporting near misses and collaborating with theinterprofessional health careteam.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Displaysselfmotivation to independently manage time effectively timelydocument care minimize incidental overtime and prioritize dailytasks.

Provides input into the unit resource utilization includingunit capital and operational budgetneeds.

Contributes towardsmeeting department financial targets on unitbased scorecard throughdecreasing length of stay optimizing efficiency and other areasaccording to departmentspecifications.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement in patientcare or unit operations using evidencebased practice literature.

Offers innovative solutions through evidencebasedpractice / performance improvement projects and shared governanceactivities.

Champions newcare pathways or service line implementation to improve service tothe community. Identifies trends for improvement opportunities orpractice changes and supports initiatives.

Researches the changeand presents options to shared governance andleadership.

EDUCATION

Bachelorof Science degree or higher from an accredited School ofNursing

WORKEXPERIENCE

Two years ofregistered nurse experience in a healthcareenvironment

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • RNRegistered Nurse Texas State Licensure and / or Compact StateLicensure within 60 days OR
  • RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
  • BLS Basic Life Support(AHA) AND
  • Other credentialsand certifications as defined by unit / service line

LICENSESAND CERTIFICATIONSPREFERRED

Magnet ANCCRecognized Certification in applicable specialty area

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES
