ABOUT THE COURT

Los Angeles Superior Court is the largest unified trial court in the United States. Its 580 judges and commissioners work in one of the 36 facilities within the Court's 12 judicial districts and are supported by more than 4,800 full-time Court employees.

The Court has an annual budget of more than $1 billion. Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County is geographically one of the nation's largest counties, covering 4,752 square miles and, with over 10,400,000 residents, is also one of its most populous counties.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Court Reporter Administrator (Administrator II) is a specialized position possessing knowledge of court organization, ordinances, rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to the function, operation, and administration of Court Reporters.

The Court is seeking a court reporter professional who will oversee the court reporting unit, electronic record monitoring, and the deployment of judicial assistants for courtroom coverage, ensuring efficient operations and adherence to legal standards.

The incumbent will lead a dynamic team, manage operational procedures, and maintain compliance with local and state regulations, while also ensuring the security and accuracy of court transcripts and records.

The position is ideal for someone passionate about improving court reporting services, providing access to a verbatim record for the public, and who can implement efficient courtroom coverage practices.

The position requires team leadership, collaboration, and strategic planning.

This is an at-will managerial position. The Trial Court Employment Protection and Governance Act (SB 2140) authorizes the Court to exclude managerial employees from the employment protection provisions of the Act subject to meet and confer.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Plans, organizes, and evaluates the administrative functions of the court reporting unit to meet court objectives and performance standards.
  • Oversees the performance of court reporting staff, setting development targets and providing coaching to improve skills and productivity.
  • Develops and evaluates court reporting processes, solving complex issues related to transcript accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with legal standards.
  • Implements strategic initiatives to enhance the efficiency of court reporting operations, including the design and administration of records management systems.
  • Ensures proper handling, storage, and retention of court transcripts and records, adhering to legal retention schedules and confidentiality standards.
  • Collaborates with judicial staff and external agencies to facilitate the timely release of court records while ensuring compliance with privacy laws.
  • Oversees the performance of clerical and management staff who handle transcript auditing, processing of electronic uploads of transcripts, processing requests for electronic recordings, and electronic monitoring of recorded proceedings.
  • Oversees the performance of clerical staff and management staff who handle the deployment of Judicial Assistant assignments for courtroom coverage.

TELEWORK OPPORTUNITIES

This position is eligible for some telework opportunity following an initial training period.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements at the time of application :

  • A current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California.
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible administrative support functions and / or operations as a Court Reporter - AND - at least two (2) years of the qualifying experience must have been at the level of a Managing Court Reporter having responsibility for planning, assigning, and scheduling Court Reporter staff work assignments, evaluating completed work;

and ensuring effective staff performance.

At the level of a Managing Court Reporter is defined as possessing specialized knowledge of court organization, ordinances, rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to the function, operation, and administration of Court Reporters;

supervising a staff of Court Reporters and performing relevant supervisory duties such as planning, assigning, and reviewing work, and managing employee performance.

Qualifying evaluation of training and experience based upon submitted application materials.
