The Diocese of Charlotte is looking for a passionate, curious and innovative veteran to become the next editor of the award-winning Catholic News Herald and , and help lead a creative team of professionals to a new level of excellence.

The editor will serve on the leadership team of the Communications Office and will oversee content development and editorial direction for the Catholic News Herald's growing print (60,000 circ.

and digital channels during an exciting time in one of the nation's fastest growing communities. At least 7 years of experience as an editor, plus a bachelor's degree or higher in journalism or related field.

Must be a Catholic and familiar with Church teaching.

Position Summary :

The Editor oversees the editorial team and production of the Catholic News Herald and , the official news outlets of the Diocese of Charlotte.

This position is responsible for planning, assigning, creating or curating, and editing compelling content for the Catholic News Herald's print, online and social media channels - to inform, inspire and educate the people of the diocese and beyond in alignment with the diocese's evangelization mission.

Key Responsibilities :

1. Assign, create or curate, review and edit content for publication on the Catholic News Herald's print, online and social media channels, that communicates the bishop's priorities, aligns with Church teachings, and presents news about diocesan ministries, parishes and schools

2. Supervise editorial team and assign and monitor their work for publication on our channels

3. Oversee coverage of breaking news, sensitive subjects, and complex projects relevant to diocesan audiences

4. Edit all Catholic News Herald content for grammar, style, accuracy and appropriateness

5. Build and maintain positive relationships and coordinate stories with key constituencies including clergy, principals, department heads and ministry leaders

6. Strive to capture the diversity of the diocese, its parishes and faith communities, and its people

7. Work with the digital media specialist to keep digital content fresh and curate wire content relevant to local audiences

8. Recruit and develop freelance contributors and columnists, and review or edit their work for publication

9. Function as senior leader of the full Communications team when directors are out or unavailable

Other Responsibilities :

1. In collaboration with communications directors, supervise production of the Diocesan Annual Financial Report and other major communication items for diocesan ministries

2. In collaboration with communications directors, manage and produce other communications tasks such as managing media, internal communications, intranet content, etc.

3. Other related duties as assigned

Job Requirements :

Education, Experience, and Skills Required :

• At least 7 years of experience as an editor, plus a bachelor's degree or higher in journalism or related field.
• Must be a Catholic who is familiar with Church teaching.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (including Adobe InCopy) and MS Office software, as well as WordPress CMS.
• Familiarity with using social media (as a professional) and digital media best practices.
• Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills; ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines without compromising quality or accuracy;

experience in implementing new content initiatives; and demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to accomplish common objectives.
