The Medical Laboratory Technician II performs complexclinical testing in assigned section / s such as general laboratory,Blood Bank, and Microbiology sections, with all duties necessaryfor accurate and timely results including quality control,performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventativemaintenance of equipment.
Associates in this job recognize abnormalcritical values and follow proper guidelines for notifying medicalteam members of results.
Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomyduties related to daily operations in the laboratory.Provides / dispenses blood products as requested by medicalstaff.

Responsibilities :
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUSCompetencies : Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader ofLeaders.
- Specimen Collection / Handling / Processing obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and / or fingerstick,accurately identifies and labels appropriately;
- answers pneumatictube system; follows procedures for processing and testingspecimens, including operating various centrifuges;
obtains otherdesignated patient specimens as listed in procedure manuals.
- Result Reporting recognizes errors or improbable resultsand takes appropriate action; reports critical values per Policyand Procedure;
- performs tests within established timeframe;performs laboratory testing, if designated, in the followingsections : Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, SpecialChemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology;
performs blood bankprocedures, including crossmatching, ab id’s, and dispensing ofblood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers accordingto established procedures.
- Performs, analyzes, andrecords QC according to Policy & Procedure following CLIA, CAP,AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; performs and records PerformanceImprovement indicators and reports results.
- Performsestablished daily and periodic preventative maintenance withdocumentation; troubleshoots minor problems and initiates servicecalls as needed;
orders (or notifies assigned associate) andrestocks supplies / reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual;dates reagents and discards expired reagents.
- Takesresponsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth andcontinued education.
- Assists in training newassociates and students in Laboratory practices.
- Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHAstandards.
- Follows established protocols for safety,infection control, security, compliance, and the use of hazardousmaterials.
- Utilizes LIS and HIS computer systemsappropriately to perform, charge, and report laboratoryresults.
- Completes annual competency assessmentsuccessfully and by assigned date.
Requirements :
A. Education / Skills
- Associate degree or higher in clinicallaboratory science or medical laboratory technology from anaccredited institution or equivalent laboratory training andexperience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation42CFR493.1489 :
- Successfully completed anofficial U. S. military medical laboratory procedures trainingcourse of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold themilitary enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratoryspecialist (laboratory technician);
- 60semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that,at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medicallaboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of sciencecourses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semesterhours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology ormedical laboratory technology in anycombination;
- Laboratory training including eithercompletion of a clinical laboratory training program approved oraccredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved byHHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semesterhours listed above), or at least three months documented laboratorytraining in each specialty in which the individual performs highcomplexity testing.
B.Experience
- No experiencerequired for graduates of a clinical laboratory training programapproved or accredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approvedby HHS.
- Six Months of approved clinicallaboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotationthrough the following sections of the laboratory : Blood Banking,Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, andUrinalysis / Body Fluids in the U.
S. or with an accreditedlaboratory within the last 5 years. (This meets the AMT MLTeligibility requirement)
lessthan 5 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician(MLT).
C. Licenses,Registrations, or Certifications
- MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW / HHSrequired.
- If certification with an expirationdate is held, the certification must be maintained and keptcurrent.
- Louisiana requires StateLicensure.
- New Graduate that is BoardCertified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within 1year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
