Job Summary

Chaplain Supervisors actively supervise permanent staff, fellows, residents, and interns in the CPE program with a high level of autonomy, and ensure high-quality delivery of spiritual and culturally appropriate care to patients, families, and staff at UCSF Health.

Sets schedules, provides direction and clinical-educational training, reviews personnel performance, and makes recommendations for program improvements.

Involves the facilitation and nurturing of personal religious rituals and spiritual practices for patients, their families, staff, faculty, allied health students (as applicable), and other health care team members.

As a member of the CPE Faculty, provides graduate-level education for chaplain fellows, residents, and interns including curriculum building, complex on-call scheduling / management, 1 : 1 and small group supervision and education.

Provides spiritual care and emotional support, including exploration of issues that are of meaning and value and / or issues causing moral or spiritual distress to patients, their families, staff, and others.

Serves as a bridge to patient's religious community or congregation and to appropriate clergy or religious / spiritual leaders.

Offers education and fosters conversation and clarification on cultural, ethical, religious, and other topics / dynamics that can affect patient care, family interactions, and staff performance.

Includes 24 / 7 availability for consultation with team members and students, on a regular rotation, as well as periodic on-site on-call overnight shifts serving patients, families, and staff.

Requires a high level of autonomy and ability to manage complexity and crisis situations involving patients, loved ones, staff, and students, navigating the breadth of complexity at Mission Bay, Mount Zion and Parnassus.

Note : We are offering a new hire sign-on bonus of $7,500, for external hires who have not worked for the University of California in the last 12 months.

In addition, a relocation package will be available for those external hires who meet the relocation requirements.

Department Description

UCSF Health's Department of Spiritual Care Services provides 24 / 7 / 365 spiritual and emotional support to adult and pediatric patients, their loved ones, and UCSF faculty, staff, and students at three clinical campuses (Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion).

Our department is one of the largest in the Western U.S. and has been an integral part of UCSF's service and teaching mission since the early 1960's.

Chaplains are trusted and valued members of interdisciplinary teams in both inpatient and outpatient contexts, and our CPE program is distinctive for its creative and wide-ranging approach to helping people learn the art of spiritual caregiving.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or six years of relevant experience.
  • Five (5) or more years relevant chaplaincy and Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Educator experience.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, best practices, and regulations involved in providing quality interfaith clinical pastoral care, as well as understanding of the role that spiritual care plays in both care coordination and clinical patient care.
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff to improve spiritual services.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and lead assigned staff in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse ethnicities, lifestyles, spiritual and religious traditions, cultures, ages, and health conditions, as well as with similarly diverse colleagues on an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Maintains cooperative working relationships with professional and administrative staff, peers, multidisciplinary team members, management, and learners.
  • Knowledge of techniques of spiritual and behavioral counseling and skills to quickly evaluate complex or unusual cases and provide guidance within defined procedures and policies.

Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking.

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain spiritual care concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Solid knowledge of organization's medical record application to troubleshoot issues and recommend improvements in convenience and efficiency.

Note : This position is based in San Francisco and one must be available to work on-site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes and the ability to ensure that spiritual care practices and operations are in compliance with them.
  • Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama : the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and / or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).

License / Certification

Licenses :

Ordination, commissioning, or endorsement by one's affiliation group to function as a chaplain and educator. Maintains good standing in affiliation group.

Certifications :

Certification status as a Certified Educator or National Faculty with ACPE the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education.
