AGC Automotive Americas has an opening for an R&D Research Scientist- Analytical Chemist in Ypsilanti, MI. This individual will be part of team to provide technical guidance, solve problems, and make hands on contribution through research, development, validation, and transfer of new technology in support of global product development and manufacture of new and existing glass and glazing products.

Position Responsibilities :

Conduct complex qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop new products or knowledge.

Ability to understand and operate complex analysis equipment and instrumentation, particularly GCMS & FT-IR.

• Work on multiple R&D projects and activities for glass and glazing products, services, and applications, in parallel.
• Participate and then lead functional glazing research projects for automotive glazing. Collaborate with startups and leverage cutting-edge technologies to enhance our product offerings.

Conduct in-depth research on automotive trends, materials, and technologies.

• Apply critical thinking and statistical methods in data analysis to determine the next step of R&D project.
• Prepares and presents highly complex conclusions in reports and technical papers.
• Troubleshoot new or existing product problems involving designs, materials, or processes.
• Develop project roadmaps guided by clear goals, objectives timelines and activities that contribute to the improvement of AGC glass products, customer satisfaction and professional development.
• Reviews research, testing, quality control and other operational reports to ensure that quality standards, efficiency and schedules are met.
• Utilize a Gate approach to Research and Development.
• Obtain, review, and interpret production schedules, engineering / customer specifications, orders, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities.

• Evaluate vendor capabilities, and develop and maintain collaborative relationships with outside labs, customers, and material and equipment suppliers.
• Participate / contribute to the concept, design, and development of new materials and processes within a project team.
• Identify opportunities or implement changes to improve products or reduce costs using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment, assembly methods, quality control standards, or product design, materials and parts.
• Manages assigned laboratory space including room and equipment operating procedures, training, and validation of competency of those entering and utilizing the assigned lab and or equipment.
• Participates in and supports the organization’s intellectual property strategy by documenting data and sharing independent, unique, and patentable ideas that result from experimentation and concept generation activities.
• Invests time in knowledge, skills and ability development of self and others.
• Assures that all duties and responsibilities are accomplished in accordance with company policies, practices, expectations, and goals and legal regulations and approves or gains approval of modification to formulas, standards, specifications, and processes.
• Design, develop, recommend, and incorporate new methods and processes to improve existing operations including utilization of associates, existing processes, and materials.

Educational requirements, Certifications :

B.S or M.S degree in chemistry, Physics, Material science, related engineering discipline or equivalent.

Experience :

3+ years R&D projects in industry, chemical or automotive preferred.
