Responsibilities :
The Senior Managing Counsel for Client Services (Senior Managing Counsel) position will provide strategic legal advice and lead a team of attorneys providing counsel to Sales and Account staff on a variety of legal matters, including go-to-market strategy for new solutions, modifications or enhancements to existing solutions, client contract development, negotiation and enhancement, and regulatory / legislative matters (as necessary to support Regulatory and Government Affairs), while working alongside senior Cigna Healthcare leadership.
The position requires a solid understanding of health care client-related contracting, the regulatory enforcement environment, and highly complex federal and state health care and insurance laws and regulations.
The Senior Managing Counsel and his or her staff will take ownership of issues and coordinate with other parts of the business to reach successful solutions across the enterprise.
To be successful, this individual must address the business needs of the organization while protecting the organization from risk.
The Senior Managing Counsel will also work closely with the Compliance leadership to address known and potential regulatory, legal, and business risks related to client contracting, and the Senior Managing Counsel will work with the business to find business-focused methods to mitigate or eliminate those risks.
Strong analytical skills are required and a successful candidate must work effectively on a cross-functional team, but also develop and manage relationships with business clients at all levels of the organization.
The Senior Managing Counsel and his or her team will have both regional and subject matter responsibilities, allowing for strong coverage of legal issues across the country.
This team will also be aligned to provide designated support to specific accounts warranting such designated support (e.
g., Tier One National Accounts). Finally, this team will be expected to assist Regulatory with staffing for client presentations regarding the impact to client contracts of state health insurance laws as well as federal health benefit plan laws.
On privacy matters, the Senior Managing Counsel and his or her staff will be assisted by Cigna's Privacy Office.
Qualifications, Skills & Capabilities :
- Law degree; at least 8 years corporate legal department or law firm experience.
- JD and Bar membership.
- Deep healthcare expertise, specifically in managed care and regulatory is needed.
- Previous Management experience is needed.
- Ability to think strategically and assist a business team by predicting, mitigating and avoiding legal risk. The individual should be able to work independently as a lawyer, but successfully contribute as a member of the Cigan Healthcare leadership team.
- Proven experience developing and leading highly-engaged legal teams.
- Requires a customer-focused and creative approach to problem solving and the ability to efficiently manage a substantial number of issues and competing priorities effectively.
- Strong analytical and contract writing skills, strong negotiating skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.
- Exceptional track record of project and process management.
- Demonstrated good judgment and willingness to take on difficult projects.
- Strong experience in measuring and analyzing process as well as results, to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Strong ability to maneuver through business barriers to facilitate solutions.
- Knowledge of Evernorth and Cigna products and solutions a plus.
- Hybrid role- This role requires someone to be in the St. Louis, Philadelphia, Connecticut, or Minneapolis office 50% of the time.
