Responsibilities

The Health Program Coordinator, located in Albany, New York, will be responsible for surveillance and special projects related to the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) in the region’s 17 counties.

The HPC will conduct active, population-based surveillance for EIP pathogens in both the FoodNet and ABCs programs, by performing medical chart reviews and abstractions and using the NYSDOH electronic laboratory and communicable disease reporting systems to identify cases and collect surveillance information.

The incumbent will act as a liaison between NYSDOH, laboratories, hospitals, and local health departments to coordinate surveillance efforts.

The HPC will assist with the implementation of EIP special surveillance projects, working with other NYSEIP staff, and in collaboration with CDC partners and other participating EIP sites, as well as assisting the Regional Epidemiology Program with disease outbreak investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of experience contributing to the coordination of program activities in a public health, health, health regulatory, or human services related program;

OR an Associate's degree in a related field and four years of such experience; OR six years of such experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in communicable disease surveillance with knowledge of associated laboratory testing, results interpretation, and reporting and application of standardized surveillance protocols for data collection.

Working knowledge of public health surveillance systems and electronic laboratory reporting systems. Knowledge of medical terminology.

Experience with medical chart abstraction. Background in medical technology or experience working in a clinical laboratory.

Strong methodological and analytical skills with proficiency in statistical programs (e.g., SAS) and Microsoft software (e.

g., Excel, Access). Experience planning and presenting at meetings with medical and laboratory providers. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience working in a team environment and independently. Experience supervising staff.
