ThePhysician provides professional medical direction, oversightand direct patient care in a correctionalfacility

The successful applicant should beable to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and levelof performance consistent with the actual job performancerequirements.

Provide a variety ofprofessional medical services to inmates / residents to includeadministering examinations, diagnosing medical and other problems,prescribing medications and providing treatment and follow-upcare.

Provide direction in leadership for the medical programin collaboration with the Health ServicesSupervisor

Monitor and review operationsand standards of care delivered toinmates / residents.

Interview inmates / residents and make decisions onadmissions.

Make clinicalrounds

Participate in treatment team meetings where individualhealth plans of inmates / residents are devised, reviewed andaltered.

Direct unit treatmentoperations.

Perform minor surgery and occasional major surgery, ifnecessary.

Hold clinics for nursing specialists in makingdiagnosis, determining treatment, and giving prescriptions andprotocols.

Maintain a good working relationship with facilitystaff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provideragencies.

Utilize established corporate, facility andcorrectional policies and procedures in making decisions, but usesound independent judgment in meeting the responsibilities andperforming the duties of theposition.

Assist in the formulation offacility policy for themedical.

Motivate and encourage staff to perform their dutiesconsistent with policy andprocedures.

Regularly evaluate the provision of all medicalservices to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of thoseservices.

Monitor inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations andfacilitate early release whenever clinicallyappropriate.

Closely monitor all potential catastrophicillnesses.

Prepare and maintain a variety ofstandard narrative, statistical, summary and / or operationalrecords, reports and logs, using appropriate grammar, to includefiling, alphabetizing and labeling;

review reports and recordsproduced by medical staff; properly processes all reports anddocuments in a timelymanner.

Maintain absolute security andconfidentiality of all medicalrecords.

Audit medical files fordocumentation of all providedservices.

Evaluate and recommend methods of improving operationalefficiency and cost effectiveness of health-relatedservices.

Meet with outside hospital / agency administrators toensure a close working relationship between them and thefacility.

Facilitate, where applicable, NCCHC / ACA / JCAHOaccreditation of the medical program by providing the requiredlevel of organizational efficiency and approved, appropriatemedical services.

Accept on callstatus.

Attend seminars, workshops,conferences, etc., asrequired.

Provide for health counseling and health education onindividual or groupbasis.

Communicate responsibilities, authorities andaccountability to all direct subordinates, so that they are clearlydefined and understood.

Conduct meetings of subordinate staff, attend scheduledstaff meetings, and promote communications and the proper flow ofrelevant information between administration, staff andinmates / residents;

assist in maintaining communications andconsistency of operation between shifts in the medicalunit.

Communicate effectively and coherently toadministration, staff, inmates / residents, visitors and the generalpublic, particularly in situations requiring tact, diplomacy,understanding, fairness, firmness and goodjudgment.

This includes giving information, instructions anddirections, mediating disputes and providing reliable testimony, incourt and other formal settings.

Read,analyze, comprehend and interpret technical procedures orgovernmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents, includingthe processing of such documents as medical instructions,commitment orders, summons and other legalwrits.

Review,process and respond (via corporate counsel) to lawsuits; attendcourt hearings, when necessary; conduct research of charts;

reviewstatus of inmates / residents with serious health problems forcompletion of all necessary intervention andtreatment.

Prepare and disseminate safety andaccident reports as required by policy; take appropriate action incases of serious and unusual incidents andemergencies.

Assist with investigations andinquires; exercise independent judgment by determining whenprobable cause exists to recommend or take disciplinaryaction.

Observe and recordinmate / resident behavior.

Inspect the medical unit foritems that could be used as contraband by inmates / residents;securely store supplies and equipment or provide for their safedisposal.

Reliablyand repetitively identify inmates / residents by visualmeans.

Performsearches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband,which will involve detecting and identifying objects and detainingpeople.

Engage infunctions in confined areas that include such things as physicallychecking the doors, windows and other areas to verify they aresecure.

Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with thehostile views and opinions of inmates / residents and other, e.g.

visitors and family members, encountered in an antagonisticenvironment.

Take appropriate action to preventor diffuse potentially disruptivesituations.

Perform rescue functions ataccidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basicemergency medical aid, physically removing people away fromdangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people fromconfined areas.

Interpret, enforce and comply with applicable rules,regulations, policies, procedures, standards and / or contractrequirements.

Establish and maintain effective working relations withothers and handle difficult interpersonalcontacts.

Effectively present information and respond toquestions from supervisors, staff members, contractors, businesscontacts, representatives from governmental agencies and thegeneral public.

Define problems, collect data, establish facts and drawvalid conclusions; apply management techniques to problems ofadministration and devise workablesolutions.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers,common fractions and decimals; apply concepts such as fractions,percentages, ratios and proportions to practicalsituations.

Interpret an extensive variety of instructionsfurnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduleform.

Remainalert at all times and react quickly, efficiently and calmly inemergency and other high stresssituations.

DomesticU. S. travel may be required.

Qualifications :

Graduate from an accredited schoolof medicine.

Must be licensed to practice medicine in the state ofemployment.

A valid driver's license isrequired.

Minimum age requirement : Must be at least 18 years ofage.
