The Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) invites applications for a career Nuclear Data Scientific Engineer position from scientists and / or engineers with a record of substantial accomplishments in nuclear data research and program development.

The mission of the LBNL-UCB Nuclear Data Group is to address the nuclear data needs of the applied and basic nuclear science community while training the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers in the process.

The successful candidate will take on significant responsibilities in the development of new applied and basic nuclear science programs within the Nuclear Data Group, particularly with regards to neutron-induced nuclear reaction data.

They will also provide a supporting role in the training of students and postdoctoral researchers and share in the scientific administrative requirements of the group, including compiling quarterly reports, and will contribute to the high safety standards and practices in the group.

What You Will Do :

  • Support a nuclear data measurements program at the 88-Inch Cyclotron and on campus to determine reaction cross-section and nuclear structure data relevant, for example, to isotope production.
  • Strengthen an integrated LBNL-UC Berkeley program in nuclear data evaluation and measurements that utilizes unique local capabilities including the 88-Inch Cyclotron and the Nuclear Technology Innovation Laboratory on the UC-Berkeley campus.
  • Support development of nuclear data programs and activities that address key national needs, including national security, nonproliferation, isotope production and the development of fission and fusion energy systems.
  • Provide oversight and management of the group’s activities and funding to meet its goal within the national and international data evaluation and measurement community.
  • Actively engage with sponsors and the research and applied communities that use nuclear data to help define a national strategy involving nuclear data.
  • Work closely with LBNL’s Office of National & Homeland Security to build the national security application driven portfolio of nuclear data projects and ensure related work is focused on closing key gaps.
  • Aid in the mentoring of students and postdoctoral researchers in their research at LBNL, UC Berkeley and other collaborating institutions.

Required Qualifications :

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in Nuclear Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field, including five or more years of relevant professional experience beyond the Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated success in securing research funds through proposal and grant applications and in carrying out the corresponding research.
  • Experience leading a research team of scientists and engineers at a wide range of experience levels from student through early-career researcher.
  • 3 or more years of experience in applied and / or basic nuclear data program development.
  • Knowledge and expertise in experimental techniques and measurements neutron-induced reactions, neutron detection, charged particle detectors, capture gamma-ray spectroscopy.
  • A record of accomplishment and publication in Applied Nuclear Science research.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work with senior leaders, manage organizational growth, and advise on operational, management and administrative matters.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Deep understanding of nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear security missions of the US government and related funding agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholders how nuclear data gaps impact nonproliferation and nuclear security missions.

Notes :

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $135,000-$190,000 per year, which fits within the full salary range of $134,316-$226,656.

Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
