Job Summary

  • Reporting to the Journals Director, the Associate Publisher works within a team of publishers responsible for : (a) the overall business health and performance of the scholarly journals published by the University of Chicago Press;
  • b) growing the reach and readership of the journals in collaboration with colleagues in marketing, sales, and other departments across the Journals Division;

and (c) managing client relationships with University faculty, academic society officers, and editorial office staff connected to the journal portfolio.

The Associate Publisher has responsibility for managing a select portfolio of journals and supports the publisher team as needed.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with marketing, sales, client services, or operations experience to join the business and client management side of journal publishing.

Responsibilities

Manage the business administration and P&L of a select portfolio of journals across a range of disciplines.

Assist with the portfolio management of journals to achieve journal goals and promote long-term business health.

Actively contribute to management discussions and work within a team on portfolio-wide strategies and initiatives.

Assist with developing and executing strategic plans to achieve journal goals and promote long-term business health.

Manage projects and relationships with licensing, abstract and indexing, and related partners.

Support others in the preparation and presentation of business reports for clients. Use research, analytical, and visual presentation skills to compose clear narratives for reporting on journal health trends, market forces, and publisher initiatives to a varied audience, including academics and scholarly society officers.

Work with colleagues across departments on administrative projects of variety of levels and provide reporting to colleagues.

Learn and track industry trends affecting scholarly journal publishing. Advise authors, editors, and other colleagues on publishing and open access policies.

Managing additional journals or partnerships.

Solves a range of straightforward problems, as work assignments are difficult and broad in nature, usually requiring originality and ingenuity.

Continues to build higher level knowledge of the University, processes and customers.

Perform other related work and take on special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience :

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications :

Preferred Qualifications

Between 2-5 years experience in the publishing industry.

Experience working with scholarly societies or academic publications.

Technical Knowledge or Skills :

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Competencies

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with a variety of academic stakeholders, including Editors-in-Chief and Society publishing partners, as well as members of Press staff.

Must embrace collaboration with business partners and colleagues internal and external to the Press.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Represent the University of Chicago Press at academic conferences and to a variety of audiences.

Strong interest in journal publishing and data analytics, sales, or marketing.

Demonstrated interest and experience with financial and business management.

Maintain confidentiality and to handle confidential matters.

Interact with colleagues and customers in a knowledgeable, professional, patient, efficient, positive, and tactful manner.

Strong organizational skills needed. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently.

Work within a team and independently with a high degree of initiative.

Manage change, conflict, and expectations in a positive and proactive manner while looking for win-win solutions to complex challenges.

Working Conditions

May require domestic and foreign travel.

A hybrid work schedule is permitted.
