At Houston Methodist the Medical LaboratoryTechnician position is responsible for performing both routine andcomplex analyses which necessitates knowledge of laboratorytechniques principles and equipment and their interrelationship.

This position exercises good judgment by using critical thinkingskills and deals with issue resolution concerning the daytodaytechnical operation of the laboratory.

The Medical LaboratoryTechnician also ensures that specimens are accessioned andprocessed expeditiously in order to deliver quality laboratoryresults in an effective and costefficientmanner.

PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotesa positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic teamfocused work unit that actively helps one another to achieveoptimal department results.

Collaborates with all members of thepatient care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinentpatient care information and data in a comprehensivemanner.

  • Teaches studentsnew employees and others as assigned byManager.
  • Participates inlaboratory and organization wideinitiatives.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performsqualitative and quantitative tests and examination using variousanalyzers and / or manualmethods.
  • Organizesworkload and sets priorities. Utilizes all available work time byassisting others and performing additionaltasks.
  • Meets turnaroundtime expectations as defined bymanagement.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrates thesix elements of competency for test systems used to generatepatient test results in all areas assigned towork.
  • Recognizesinvestigates and helps resolve test discrepancies. When problemsarise takes appropriate action to investigate and address andnotifies management and the medical director forfollowup.
  • Performsinstrument calibrations validations quality control testingmaintenance and functionchecks.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Adjusts workschedule to accommodate departmental / organizational needs.Appropriately utilizes the time recordingsystem.
  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Restocks section inventorylevels asneeded.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continualdevelopment.
  • Reviews andutilizes Standard Operating Procedure and offers suggestions forimprovement.

WORKEXPERIENCE

One year of workor training experience in a hospital laboratorypreferred

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • CLACertified Laboratory Assistant (ASCP) within 1 year OR
  • MLT(ASCP) MedicalLaboratory Technician (ASCP) within 1 year OR
  • MLT Medical LaboratoryTechnician (AMT) within 1 year

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Adapts tomultiple ongoing priorities including organizing heavy workflowwith minimalsupervision
