This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by conducting Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) surveillance data quality control and validation through systematic examination / analysis of data from multiple surveillance systems, including the web-based electronic California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) system, and performing data linkages with key Departmental data sources.

  • Additional duties will include conducting analyses of surveillance data using applications such as R, SAS, Microsoft Excel, Access, and GIS;
  • preparing statistical reports, epidemiologic summaries, maps, graphs, and tables for selected diseases; responding to data and information requests;
  • creating and maintaining electronic databases for select IDB diseases; assisting Surveillance and Statistics Section (SSS) in transferring paper-based disease case report form (CRF) information into CalREDIE;

and participating in the design and conduct of epidemiologic surveillance research studies of infectious diseases patterns, distribution, trends, and determinants using various information sources.

The CDPH Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) conducts surveillance, investigations, control and prevention of many important infectious diseases in California, including botulism, coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, zoonotic, and emerging infectious diseases.

IDB activities are in four Sections :

  • Disease Investigations Section
  • Vector-Borne Disease Section
  • Veterinary Public Health Section
  • Surveillance and Statistics Section

Job Description And Duties

Conduct quality control and validation of IDB surveillance data, including weekly quality check of data in the databases containing Confidential Morbidity Report (CMR) summary and Case Report Forms (CRFs) of general infectious diseases.

Provide consultation to and consult with the Department’s Information Technology (IT) and CalREDIE staffs, local health departments, and the U.

S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to improve data completeness and quality. Compare data across multiple surveillance systems for consistency.

Extract, link, de-duplicate, and analyze data as assigned and compile results in an approved format.

Conduct analyses of surveillance data using applications such as R, SAS, Microsoft Excel, Access, and visualization strategies such as Geographic Information System (GIS), including preparation of tables, graphs, charts, and maps.

Prepare annual statistical reports and epidemiologic summaries for selected diseases managed by the Infectious Disease Branch.

Respond to data and information requests from within the Department, other State agencies, local health jurisdictions, private providers, academic institutions, and the public (sometimes under Public Record Act) following data confidentiality rules.

Assist with implementation of studies and analysis of data, including development of study design, methodology, and data analysis plans.
