Description
NATURE OF WORK This is beginning level manual maintenance work and services of a routine and unskilled nature.Employees in this classification are responsible for the satisfactory performance of light and heavy manual laboring tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance work.
Tasks which are of routine difficulty, are learned through on-the-job training requiring exercise of limited initiative and independent judgment.
Assignments include the operation of power equipment. Work is usually closely supervised and performed under the immediate direction of an employee of a higher classification, however, many tasks may be routine and repetitive in nature and accomplished under general supervision.
Examples of Duties
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
- Assists saw cutting, removing, restoring leveling asphalt roadway restorations in the rights-of-way utilizing hot mix asphalt and may operate small roller.
- Levels and compacts lime rock bases for both concrete sidewalk and roadway restorations.
- Saw cut, remove, form, rock, pour and finish concrete sidewalk slabs or curbing
- Operates, cleans and maintains small saws and compaction equipment to achieve daily Street Section tasks.
- Drives automotive vehicles and or small construction equipment to and from job sites. cleans and washes vehicles
- Inventories, loads and unloads small equipment and or materials daily to h vehicle and its contents and assists with preventive field maintenance accomplish ever changing tasks.
- Assists craft persons by carrying materials and tools; mixes mortar and concrete using prescribed amount of material; cleans up job site upon completion of project
- Digs and cleans ditches and trenches; levels dirt and asphalt; drives stakes, breaks up rocks, concrete and lays sod
- Installs new / old road signs and posts / anchors; clears brush from roadside; erects barricades and ribbon to protect City from liability.
- Removal of animal carcasses from City's rights-of-way and Facilities
- Sweeps walks; removes refuse and paper from City right of way grounds and or buildings
- Performs related work as required
Requirements
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency diploma
- PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION . (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- One (1) years experience in repair, construction and maintenance; experience in the operation of hand tools and power equipment required
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to acquire an Intermediate Temporary Control (TTC) Certificate within 6 months
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment
Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions : varying temperatures, inclement weather, and / or other adverse conditions.
Tasks are occasionally performed at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may not be accessible to the physically handicapped.
Sensory
The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and / or other City-issued technology devices.
Physical
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools.
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor, often under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and / or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to load, carry, lift, push and / or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Some knowledge of simple hand tools used in maintenance and construction
- Ability to acquire knowledge of basic repair, construction and maintenance procedures
- Ability to develop skill in use and care of hand tools and other related equipment
- Ability to occasionally operate simple power equipment used in landscaping
- Ability to acquire knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions
