About the Job
Adjunct instructor positions to teach one or more graduate courses in the areas of General Industry Occupational Safety, Fire Life Safety, Environmental Management, Emergency Management, Disaster Preparedness, Ergonomics, Construction Safety, System Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Insurance, Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Hazard Recognition and Control.
Course modality is in-person. Instructors will prepare and deliver curriculum.
Develop curricula for classes to be taught, including assembling materials, developing evaluation instruments and lesson plans, using the learning management system, creating PowerPoint slides, etc.
Job Duties will include :
Teaching
- Develop and teach courses
- Demonstrate high command of their subject matter
- Have well organized course plans and deliver courses clearly to students
- Make an effort in curricular development Help students fulfill their academic needs
- Maintain a consistent and positive student teaching evaluation record
- Supervise student research
- Advise students regarding both specific coursework and broader academic or career goals, both inside and outside the classroom
Research
- Make original contributions to the knowledge and interpretation of their field
- Establish their own research program, and earn an excellent reputation in their field exceptional distinction in scholarship Publish refereed journal articles of satisfactory quality and quantity
- Make effort in seeking external research funding
Service
- Participate in ongoing professional activities of one's discipline Hold an official position such as an officer or program or section chairperson
- Conference organization
- Consultant to press, journal, institution, industry, or government because of one's expertise
- Participation in campus or system-wide committees
- Outreach or community service that is reasonably related to the professional role of a faculty member
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in safety, environmental health, safety management, risk management or a closely related field
- One year of relevant teaching experience at the college level (graduate TA experience acceptable)
- Effective written communication skills appropriate to the position
- Experience in using technology for teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of industry experience
- Prior teaching or training experience
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) professional certification
- Terminal degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant field
- Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or professional experience in a relevant field
- Experience teaching a variety of upper and lower division courses such as those offered by the UMD
- Effective teaching and communication skills appropriate to the position
- Expertise in using technology for teaching
- Demonstrated experience with assessment
- Evidence of the ability to work effectively with diverse groups
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range : $5,700-$6,700 ; depending on education / qualifications / experience.
Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor-Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications.
