The Al-Marah Equine Center (AMEC) at the Arizona Experiment Station is seeking an Animal Technician II to join our team.

AMEC was donated to the University of Arizona by the late Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Bazy Tankersley. Our mission is to honor her legacy by improving the lives of horses and people through education, community service, and research.

This position is responsible for all aspects of routine animal husbandry including feeding, watering, maintaining facility cleanliness, continual observation of health and wellbeing of horses, and maintaining records for horses housed at AMEC.

The successful candidate will ensure areas where animals are housed are clean, safe and compliant with policies from IACUC and the University.

The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, strong work ethic, ability to adjust to changing environments, and the ability to function within a collaborative team.

This position currently works a 4 day 10-hour work schedule, however, can be changed at the manager's discretion, based on need, to a possible 5 day 8-hour work schedule.

This position is Sunday-Wednesday, including some holidays and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide daily animal husbandry to horses that are housed in stalls, turnouts and pastures at AMEC. This includes, but not limited to, feeding a minimum of twice daily, freshening or filling water a minimum of twice daily, cleaning of housing areas a minimum of once daily, performing regular cleaning of feed and water containers, and reporting any animal concerns.
  • Assist with oversight and assessment of animal well-being.
  • Ensure that stalls and enclosures are safe and compliant with IACUC regulations where indicated.
  • Assist with other duties that support AMEC activities and ensure wellbeing of horses at AMEC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Skill in handling and working with horses.
  • Ability to catch and place a halter on a horse, and to lead, and groom a horse.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Physical Requirements :

  • Must be able to lift / move / transport up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in environment that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting, and turning.
  • Work in environment that requires working outside in extreme heat, cold, and other outside elements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience working with horses of all ages and genders.
  • 3 years of experience feeding and caring for horses, including cleaning stalls.
  • Ability to drive a truck according to theUniversity .

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with driving a trailer.
  • Experience with lifting / transporting up to 100 pounds.
