Purpose
The Municipal ServicesElectrician inspects, installs, services, repairs and maintains electricalequipment for the City of Milwaukee's street lighting, traffic control, waterand sewer instrumentation, communication network systems, buildings, andfacilities.
Essential Functions
Inspect, install,service, repair, and / or maintain the following :
- Overhead and underground wires, cables, transformers, switchgear and other accessories, underground conduits, manholes, and vaults.
- Electronic / electrical and mechanical equipment and poles used to carry wires and cables.
- Computerized systems, monitoring / control systems, DC battery systems, high voltage systems, variable speed drive equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, alarms, and various motor types.
- Cranes, telemetry, fiber optic and metallic cable, data-line telemetry, parking control, and other electric / electronic systems.
- Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and all types of raceway systems.
Perform driving duties :
Drive or operate commercial and / or non-commercial vehicles as needed in assigned work unit.

Conditions of Employment
- Municipal Services Electricians must be available for emergency call-in work. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be assigned on a rotating schedule.
- Ability to see colors in order to use color-coded wiring systems (cannot have color vision deficiency).
- Ability to work in confined underground spaces.
- Must be able to perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility, including ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps or poles;
walking and standing, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.
- Must be able to work at heights in excess of 100 feet.
- Must be able to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 lbs. frequently.
- Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain, wind, excessive heat, intense cold and snow.
Thepreplacement medical requirements for this title include :
- Physical / lift test
- Audiogram
- Vision
- DOT Drug Test
Minimum Requirements
- Four years of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical services and equipment.
- Valid driver's license at time of application, throughout the selection process and throughout employment.
- A good driving record at time of application, throughout te shelection process, and throughout employment.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A, B, and C covering general, air brakes, and combination sections within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable Qualifications
- Successful completion of an electrical apprenticeship program.
- State of Wisconsin certification as a Master or Journey-level Electrician.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Knowledge of electrical wiring, circuitry, and / or electronic components.
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC).
- Practical knowledge of work involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the electrical systems described in the essential functions above.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and other electrical specifications.
- Ability to use hand tools and other mechanical equipment common to the electrical profession.
- Knowledge of and commitment to safe work practices.
Communication, Customer Service, and Teamwork
- Ability to read and understand documents such as policies, procedures, and manuals.
- Verbal communication skills to effectively respond to repair requests in person and to communicate technical information to non-technical customers.
- Knowledge of and commitment to customer service best practices.
- Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with coworkers and customers whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
Current Salary
The current salaryrange (Pay Range 7LN) is $92,987-$120,936 and the resident incentive startingannual salary for the City of Milwaukee residents is $95,777-$124,564.
Appointment above the minimum is possiblebased upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject toapproval.
- Additional $1.50 per hour when designated to hold the Wisconsin Electrical Contractor License for the City.
- Employees will receive an additional 5% when assigned lead work.
