The YMCA of South Florida is looking for a highly motivated and energetic assistant coach to join our established and successful swim team.
We currently train out of the Weston YMCA and are growing another team location at our Hallandale and Hollywood YMCA locations.
The incumbent in this role would need to commit to 6-10 hours a week to lead the growth of our teams. The general schedule would be 3-4 weekdays one Saturday and being present for meets as needed.
Practice times currently range between 5-8pm for 1-2 hours on weekdays, and early to late mornings on Saturdays. The responsibilities of the coaching staff are not limited to the deck hours, as events, season planning, and other factors are involved in the planning at implementation of a successful swim season.
A successful candidate must demonstrate a proven aptitude for coaching as illustrated by a strong work ethic, organizational skills, computer skills, and the ability to interact professionally.
The successful candidate must work closely with other coaches in carrying out the philosophy and objectives of the YMCA of South Florida Swim Club.
Essential Functions / Job Duties :
Duties for the coach include, but are not limited to :
- Motivating swimmers of all ages to be great in a positive way.
- Helping the coaching team in implementing the program's seasonal plan successfully assisting with other groups as needed
- Administrative duties, such as swim meet entries, tracking progress and email communication.
- Attending swim meets as needed.
- Attending team functions (banquet, team-building activities).
Assigned Hours :
The Head Swim Coach and / or AED of Aquatics will determine Hours. Hours are not guaranteed as a set per week, but will fluctuate depending on pool schedule, practice, swim meets, number of participants, and other staff.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities / Position Requirements :
Minimum Qualifications :
- Strong understanding of the sport of swimming and the rules and regulations.
- A sound understanding of stroke mechanics and training techniques.
- 3+ years of competitive swimming experience.
- Strong communication skills (both oral and written).
- Communicate effectively and timely with the coaching staff, swimmers and parents as needed.
- Must have / demonstrate professionalism, decision-making skills, and a willingness to follow directives from the Association Director of Competitive Aquatics.
- Individual characteristics : positive, energetic, flexible, passionate, team-oriented etc.
- Must have, or obtain, before coaching on deck : Adult & Pediatric / Child CPR and AED, First Aid, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, and all applicable Background Checks.
- Must have, or be willing to learn, basic working knowledge of team's computer software.
- Must have a desire to learn and continue coaching education.
- Bilingual, English and Spanish, a plus.
- Able to respond in emergency situations.
Preferred Qualifications :
- 2+ years of coaching experience.
- Preference is given to swim experience at a college level.
- Experience with swim team- related software.
As a condition of employment and a Drug-Free Workplace you will be required to submit to and satisfactorily clear a thorough Level II fingerprinting background screening and drug test.
