The Opportunity :

Under the general direction of the Health Science Campus Safety EHS Officer, the Laboratory Safety Specialist provides technical support services for ensuring safe and environmentally sound management of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials, wastes, and processes in campus laboratories and service areas.

The Laboratory Safety Specialist conducts inspections, supports inventory programs, assists with waste collection and spill cleanup, and assists with safety training.

Responsibilities :

Performs compliance inspections related to laboratory safety and hazardous material storage and use; prepares inspection reports;

monitors completion dates of corrective action plans and provides follow-up with departments and supervisors to ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Maintains database information relating to laboratory safety and environmental management program areas.

Assists with review and input of chemical, biological, radioactive inventories stored in campus laboratories or chemical storage areas.

Monitors classification, collection, transportation, storage, and documentation of chemical, biological, and radioactive waste prior to off-site shipment.

Maintains waste storage facility and spill response equipment.

Assists in providing safety training and guidance to the university community.

Performs surveying / sampling activities for potentially contaminated areas; assists in response to, investigation, and follow-up on laboratory and environmental incidents, accidents, and spills.

Assist with the preparation of applications, record-keeping, reporting and compliance testing for environmental permits, registrations, and notifications.

Assists in shipping, receiving, and delivery of hazardous materials / dangerous goods for the laboratory community.

Assists in updating applicable internal documents.

Assists with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. .

Preferred Qualifications :

OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.

Current DOT hazardous materials training.

Special Instructions to the Applicants :

This position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. This position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.

The selected candidate must qualify to wear a respirator, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
