Department of Education and Public Programs

Introduction

The Education Specialist position is located in the Department of Education and Public Programs (DEPP) of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

The purpose of the position is to develop and implement education programs and resources for the Library and Museum’s diverse audiences with an emphasis on K-12 students and teachers.

The incumbent reports to the Director of Education and Public Programs and is an employee of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesProgram Development for K-12 Students

Develops and implements school programs that take place both onsite and virtually. Prepares and presents student-centered, curriculum-related programs featuring the Museum’s permanent galleries and special exhibitions, as well as primary sources from the Library’s collections.

Coordinates scheduling with the Visitor Services Staff and communicates with teachers in advance of each program.

Develops student-centered, curriculum-related materials related to history and / or civic education. Works collaboratively with other departments and with outside designers to create engaging and useful printed resources for use in the galleries.

Prepares curriculum-based content, activities, and materials for teachers for the Library and Museum’s website, and for the department’s e-newsletter.

Collaborates with DEPP staff to plan and implement training for docents and part-time educators who lead programs for school groups.

Professional Development for Educators

Works with DEPP staff to plan professional development conferences and workshops for educators, including developing and implementing content, managing logistics and budgets, and working with Foundation colleagues on marketing and promotion.

Represents the Library and Museum at professional development conferences and meetings.

Program Coordination

Manages the annual Profiles in Courage Essay Contest for high school students. Partners with other Foundation staff and the contest sponsor(s) to create printed materials and website content.

Works with the DEPP Program Coordinator to reach out to schools and teachers about the program, track submissions, and coordinate the judging process.

Makes arrangements for the winner’s participation in the Profiles in Courage Award Ceremony. Prepares the budget for the program and allocates resources within the guidelines and policies of the Foundation.

Other Educational Activities

Participates in department-wide education initiatives and provides support to DEPP colleagues as needed.

Supports Foundation-related programs and events as needed.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • B.A. in history, education, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in developing and implementing history and / or civics programming for K-12 audiences in a museum, library, archives, or a similar institution.
  • Familiarity with K-12 curriculum standards on both the state and national level.
  • Knowledge of best practices in gallery teaching and informal education.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) in educational programming.
  • Experience with using technology to support program implementation, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Works under the general supervision of the Director of Education and Public Programs of the Library and Museum who establishes goals in terms of resources available and policy.

Collaborates as needed with supervisor on the priorities in order to best complete tasks. Work is reviewed in terms of accomplishment of department and project objectives, and effectiveness of department programs.
