Hiring / Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range : The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $68,000 / yr. - $70,000 / yr.
Full Salary Range : The full salary range for this position is $63,800 / yr. - $111,600 / yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience;
the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.
Work Location : Recreation Center
Working Days and Hours : Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm with some night and weekend work required

Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Aquatics & Safety, the Aquatics & Safety Coordinator is directly responsible for the design, implementation, coordination, and the general supervision of the Recreation Department's aquatic & safety training certification classes.
The Aquatics & Safety Coordinator works with Recreation Department Assistant Directors to ensure all department staff are appropriately safety trained and certified.
The coordinator will serve as the main point of contact between the department and safety certifying agencies. The incumbent recruits, onboard, evaluates, mentors, and schedules lifeguards, lifeguard instructors, and other safety / aquatic part-time staff.
Makes frequent, autonomous procedure and policy judgment calls in order to maintain a high level of service to patrons and campus partners.
Acts as area lead in absence of Assistant Director for Aquatics & Safety in terms of day-to-day program operations and lifeguard staff supervision.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Previous experience supervising staff.
- Minimum of 1 year experience teaching safety certification classes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in related area.
- 2+ years of aquatic programming or pool operations experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- CPR / 1st Aid certified; CPR / 1st Aid Instructor certified; Lifeguard Certification; Lifeguard Instructor certified; Water Safety Instructor certified.
- Thorough knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.

Special Conditions of Employment
- Maintain current CPR / 1st Aid Certification; CPR / 1st Aid Instructor certification.

- Maintain current Water Safety Instructor certification.
- Frequent night and weekend work required.
- Mandated reporting requirements of Child Abuse.
- Satisfactory conviction history background check .

Job Functions and Percentages of Time :
35% Safety Program Operations :
Coordinates and administers all safety certification classes e.g. CPR, First Aid, AED, CA Title XXII, Lifeguarding, Water Safety.
Ensures in-service safety / certification educational classes are offered quarterly for recreation student / professional staff as part of ongoing staff development and to outside groups for income generation purposes.
Communicates with class participants to ensure information is exchanged inclusive of inquiries, cancellations, refunds, transfers, evaluations, and feedback.
Ensures Recreation Center Customer Service Center is apprised of all class registration information. Oversees all aquatic and safety class related equipment and supplies inventories.
30% Personnel Management & Supervision :
Coordinates the hiring training and evaluation of instructors for certification / safety classes as well as lifeguards.
Responsible for the direct supervision of 10 student staff and part-time instructors. Creates weekly work schedules ensuring proper staffing of classes and assists with pool operations staffing.
Ensures staff are properly trained for their assignments and in adequate numbers to efficiently meet the required level and quality of service.
Maintains current and comprehensive manuals in relations to policies and procedures for aquatics area.
10% Aquatics Program Operations :
In coordination with the department leadership establishes and revises Aquatics policies and procedures to reduce general liability.
Acts as a department lead for use of incident / accident tracking software. Collaborates with Recreation Department facilities staff to ensure that aquatic facility and aquatic safety equipment is maintained for proper use and safety of participants.
- Responsible for recording and tracking of all training courses and certifications provided with appropriate document retention following University and certification agency requirements.
- Develops and designs standard forms such as accident / injury reports, incident reports, etc. to ensure a systematic approach to organization and management of aquatic programs.
Reviews, and responds as needed, to all aquatic area accident / injury and incident reports and determines policy and procedure changes necessary to mitigate risks where possible.
- Assist with swim lesson and group use coordination.
- Provide on-site supervision during large, complex, and high-risk aquatic events.
10% Budget Planning and Management :
Responsible for the preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets. Develop, implement, and maintain a life-cycle plan for the purchase and turnover of equipment used in the Safety program.
Design and prepare annual program budget.
Responsible for long-term budget forecasts and analysis of the Safety budget. Prepares quarterly and annual reports for the department Director that present program evaluations, statistics, and budget accounts recommendations.
Ensures that all generated income is deposited and allocated to the appropriate accounts.
Provides inventory reports and recommendations for facilities, equipment and supplies. Submits orders as necessary, within budget limitations.
10% Marketing and Development :
Works with the Recreation Department marketing team to ensure all programs are effectively marketed to the UCSB community.
Generates revenue from offering safety classes (CPR, 1st Aid, Lifeguarding) for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
5% Miscellaneous :
Serve as departmental representative on various campus committees. Serves on Department of Recreation safety committees.
Participates in department meetings, activities and events. Maintain files / records and prepare reports. Assists with the management of youth camps as required.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
