SUMMARY
The Educational Navigator will work to enhance the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) existing high school equivalency (GED) and post-secondary programs and connect offenders with GED options, Career Technical Education programs, and post-secondary education to assist them in achieving their educational goals.
The Navigator will conduct assessments and work one-on-one with each resident to develop an Education and Employment Plan based on each individual’s educational needs and aspirations.
They will serve as academic and career advisors, linking residents to all services at the correctional facility.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Assist with recruitment by distributing information to all incoming residents about programs, available career, and education pathways, and how to contact staff and faculty.
- Establish professional intrapersonal relationships with residents and encourage accountability by tracking attendance, behavior, and progress toward outcomes.
- Develop knowledge of support services available, including developmental education, peer tutoring, print and technology resources, career resource center services, re-entry services, and mental health services.
- Assist residents with career research and planning, employment search, job interviews, and job placement as they transition from adult education into post-secondary education and from the correctional facility to post-incarceration.
- Conduct regular meetings with residents regarding academic progress, career goals and opportunities, and behaviors.
- Establish ambassadors who have successfully completed the program to serve as peer mentors for the program.
- Assist graduates with job placement by working closely with KDOC Job Specialists to complete job applications and interviews prior to release.
- Assist faculty staff with essential skill development by team-teaching soft skills / employment skills such as job search, employability, and interviewing skills.
- Track program graduates upon release for two years at increments of 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 6 months, and 1 year.
- Understand and abide by the safety and security procedures, rules, and guidelines defined by KDOC and the correctional facility and participate in all required and recommended KDOC staff development training.
- Work with stakeholders providing wrap-around services to help secure internships, apprenticeships, and employment for LCF residents upon release.
- Create processes with KDOC, LCF, Workforce Partnership to gather all necessary documents for enrollment and processing of KCKCC students at LCF.
- Oversee and manage enrollment processes.
- Work to secure additional financial aid for students.
- Assist the Welding Faculty with purchases / procurement.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.
- High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employee in the organization.
- Detail oriented.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in social services, education, or related field.
- Interest and / or experience in supporting learners in an alternative setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in education, or related field.
- At least one year teaching experience, especially 9-12.
- Coaching and instructing Adult Education / Adult Learners.
- Experience teaching high school equivalency skills to adult learners preferably GED® preparation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.
WORK SCHEDULE
Anticipated hours are Monday through Friday, 7 : 00 a.m. - 3 : 00 p.m. 40 hours per week / may require some flexibility based on facility schedule.
Must be able to work a variable schedule / hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
