POSITION SUMMARY
The Patient Safety Attendant is responsible for focused monitoring of patient safety through direct 1 : 1 visual monitoring, or continuous visual observation, or camera monitoring, for patients that require an increased level of observation.
The Patient Safety Atendant promotes and maintains a safe environment, and alerts clinical staff to patient safety issues that arise.
In addition to monitoring patients for safety, this role may engage with the patient in therapeutic activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains visual observation of patient safety as outlined in facility policies and procedures for patients that require an increased level of observation
Demonstrates sensitivity and respect to the patient, family and / or significant other(s).
Maintains and documents frequent safety observation checks
Identifies and reports patient safety concerns to clinical staff
When assigned to the 1 : 1 observation of a patient, does not leave the patient until relieved by another staff person
Accompanies patient to diagnostic testing and procedures, maintaining observation of the patient during testing or procedures
Discusses with assigned nurse, guidelines for any conversation or appropriate activities with the patient.
Primary responsibility is to stay with and / or observe the patient and assure his / her safety.
Does not engage in activities that would distract from observing the patient, such as reading, studying, socializing, using personal telephone, or watching television.
Reports patient behavior details to assigned RN as needed, as well as to oncoming relief staff at the end of the shift.
Communicates and interacts with internal and external customers of various ages.
Engages in therapeutic activities with patients as appropriate, and only after consultation with the RN. Examples may include music, games, or reading.
Complies with infection control precaution standards.
Complies with safety and security policies of the hospital.
Other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Communicates effectively with clinical staff, patients and families
Maintains patient confidentiality
Ability to follow policy and procedure instructions
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / LICENSURE
Education : High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience : Previous experience in a health care setting performing similar functions preferred.
Certification / Licensure : CPI completion within three (3) months of hire.
BLS for Behavioral Health positions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Schedule : Work schedule may include 8-10 hours per day with weekend / holiday coverage based on department needs.
