The Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) at USC is seeking a Research Lab Technician III to join its lab staff. The MEC is a population-based cohort study of >
men and women that was established to study the genetic basis for many common chronic diseases and phenotypes. In the cohort, we have initiated numerous genome-wide association studies in minority populations, including prostate and breast cancer in African Americans and type 2 diabetes in Latinos.
Job Summary
Supervise unit employees and / or student workers as assigned. Plan and conduct research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.
Perform non-routine and complex research laboratory procedures and techniques independently. Maintain accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments.
Provide analyses and interpretations of results for review by supervisor. Provides input and updates on progress of research and makes recommendations for modifications as appropriate.
Selects, modifies or adapts equipment and procedures to specific research needs. Operates and maintains sophisticated laboratory and scientific equipment.
Control equipment and supply inventory and prepares chemical solutions for experimental use. Perform molecular biology and tissue culture experiment duties including solution preparation, PCR, Real Time PCR, DNA extraction, and other lab procedures following predefined protocols.
Researches, compiles and evaluates background information to enhance planning and design of experiments.
Preferred Qualifications

Ability to lead and manage a team of lab technicians and graduate students
Strong scientific and organizational skills
Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as a part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasts simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with safety policies
Basic computer skills (Word, Excel) with the ability to learn the use of additional programs specific to the research environment
Ability to perform basic calculations
Preferred Experience
At least three months related experience, previous experience in sterile tissue and cell culture.
Genotyping and sequencing experience a plus.
