DEFINITION
Provides curriculum and instruction leadership with the implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) in secondary social studies.
Ensures that all initiatives support the goals and priorities identified in the system strategic plan and the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
Provide high-quality professional development related to curriculum and instruction. Collaborate with educators, administrators, and other stakeholders to enhance social studies teaching and learning, utilizing data-driven decision making, and promoting continuous improvement.
Supervises professional and support staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
- Provides leadership in the design, development, and implementation of social studies curricula for Grades 6-12 that align with the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards and the MSDE Social Studies Framework for HQIM, and College, Career, and Civic Life (C3).
- Identifies research-based strategies to support secondary instruction in social studies.
- Provides leadership in the identification, development, implementation and interpretation of assessments aligned to the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards and social studies curriculum to support secondary administrators, department chairs, and teachers in utilizing student performance data to identify patterns and trends, inform instructional practices, and provide responsive instruction
- Identifies and recommends intervention and enrichment opportunities for secondary social studies programs.
- Evaluates and identifies approved textbooks, instructional materials, and software for secondary schools in social studies.
- Supports secondary school department chairs and teachers in the implementation of the curriculum to build capacity for high quality social studies teaching and learning.
- Collaborates with leadership in the Department of Special Education and Multilingual Achievement to ensure that all students have access to grade-level curriculum with appropriate scaffolds and linguistic supports.
- Develops collaborative relationships and external partners that benefit teachers and students.
- Supports school-based administrators in the appraisal process.
- Develops and administers operating, capital, and other budgets, and monitors business operations to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources.
Plans, budgets, controls, and assesses the use of office budget and grant funds to align to district and state priorities.
- Designs, facilitates, and coordinates effective professional learning experiences that lead to the development, implementation, and evaluation of school and system-wide social studies programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education, Training and Experience :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in a field directly related to the assignment;
plus at least fifteen (15) additional hours of approved graduate and / or in-service credit.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership / management experience in areas directly related to the above responsibilities.
- Five years of successful teaching or related experience preferred.
Licenses and Certificates :
Possession of or eligibility for an Advanced Professional Certificate with an Administrator I endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Thorough knowledge of secondary social studies education and curriculum.
- Demonstration of outstanding oral and written communications skills.
- Demonstration of strong leadership, management, and human relations skills.
- Technology competency.
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
- Knowledge of and skill in data analysis.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class occurs within school and office settings. Work includes the operation of office equipment, including personal computers, and occasional limited physical activities.
Work hours may exceed the school day into evenings and weekends.
SALARY : Grade 11 on the BCPS CASE 12-month pay scale $106,830 - $161,872.
This position is eligible for membership in the Maryland State Retirement System.
