Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus (ALC)

Type : Exempt, Full-time, Regular. This position is included in the collective bargaining unit represented by CWA Local 9410.

Location : Hybrid work schedule, based in San Francisco or Oakland, CA / Remote work may be considered; Domestic travel required

Compensation

The annual compensation depends on years of relevant experience; the salary range is $78,000 - $107,970. ALC offers an additional $1,000 annual compensation for proficiency in a language other than English and an additional $1,000 annual compensation for graduate degree(s).

ALC seeks a dynamic Community Partnerships Manager for our new National Democracy Initiative. At the core of our work lies the commitment to build the power of rapidly growing Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) immigrant communities across the nation especially in underserved regions outside of our home base of California.

As a driving force behind this initiative, the Community Partnerships Manager will collaborate with and provide essential support to grassroots organizations peer support, strategic thought partnership, technical expertise, and litigation support.

This role reports directly to the Director of ALC’s National Democracy Initiative.

The Organization

ALC was started in 1972 as the nation’s first legal organization to focus on promoting and defending Asian Americans’ and Pacific Islanders’ civil rights.

Advancing Justice-ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation, to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color.

Current program areas include Voting Rights, Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, and National Security & Civil Rights.

A growing staff of 60 provides strong collegial support and opportunities to learn about and collaborate with other program areas.

Advancing Justice-ALC is based in San Francisco, a hub of the Asian American rights movement, progressive politics, and social justice activism.

Primary Responsibilities

External

  • Nurture trusting, supportive, and constructive relationships with partner organizations around the country, and act as the primary point of contact for these groups.
  • Provide partners with strategic thought partnership and technical expertise and support that enhances their abilities to engage in advocacy and build power in their communities;

develop and provide tailored trainings and training materials for partners.

  • In partnership with ALC’s policy and legal teams, support legislative / policy advocacy campaigns of local partners, including developing and / or executing strategy as needed.
  • Represent the project and organization with external stakeholders, including funders, staff and leaders in other diverse coalitions and networks, and with potential and existing partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with allied national and / or state-level organizations to coordinate or collaborate in the provision of support and resources to local groups.

Internal

  • Coordinate and facilitate support for selected partners by engaging internal program staff and external consultants, including ALC’s legal, policy, and communications experts, data analysts, and others to ensure optimal support for partners.
  • Participate in rigorous tracking and evaluation of the initiative’s work and results.
  • Prepare written materials, such as project or policy reports and fact sheets.
  • Communicate and coordinate initiative efforts with and among other ALC program teams.

All ALC staff are expected to participate in regular check-in meetings with their supervisor / supervisees, staff meetings, team meetings, and other organization meetings, as required.

This includes two (2) annual retreats, an anniversary celebration dinner, and meetings as needed in the San Francisco Bay area.

Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, graduate degree or JD welcome
  • Five to seven (5-7) years of relevant organizing, civic engagement, and policy advocacy experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial equity, immigrant justice, and civil rights and the communities served by ALC.
  • Substantive experience working with Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, and immigrant communities, community organizations, or issues, including in at least one of ALC’s program areas
  • Enthusiastic and effective relationship-builder with the ability to build and maintain mutual trust and collaboration among community partners.
  • Campaign, project, or organizational leadership experience, with the ability to facilitate strategic planning, assessment, and evaluation issue-spotting for action and impact.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in changeable environments and among varied community stakeholders.
  • Experience working in multi-ethnic and / or multi-racial coalitions, and ability to build alignment, solidarity and mutuality.
  • Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects, and balance competing priorities with grace and reason.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends (with a healthy work-life balance).
  • Bilingual skills in English and an Asian language are preferred.
