POSITION SUMMARY

The Sompo Compliance Department seeks a Head of Compliance, North America to lead Sompo’s talented team of US-based compliance professionals, as well as have oversight with respect to Compliance in Bermuda and Canada.

This position will report directly to the Company’s Chief Compliance Officer. Candidates should have experience supporting the regulatory compliance and related needs of commercial P&C insurers operating within the United States;

experience in Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico is a plus.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities include :

  • Manage the Corporate Regulatory Reporting, Industry & State Reporting, and Agency / Broker Management teams, providing support and feedback to team members in their handling of matters such as regulatory filings, regulatory data and statistical reporting, licensing, examinations, and related tasks.
  • Design and implement a compliance framework, including policies, procedures, controls, monitoring and management reporting to prevent, detect and respond to potential violations of law, regulation, or company policy.
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders in Internal Audit, Legal, Risk Management, and Product Development to develop and implement a compliance risk assessment and second-line compliance monitoring review process for the Company’s US insurance operations.
  • Keep well informed of changes to statutes, regulations, industry trends, and lessons learned within the organization to ensure the Company’s US insurance operations adhere to applicable legal requirements and industry best practice.
  • Assist with engagement of regulators, industry associations, statistical agents and bureaus, and other industry experts to formulate company positions on key regulatory and policy matters of import to the Company and become familiar with emerging trends that could impact the company.
  • Develop and implement processes for managing information, such as consumer complaints, filings, licenses, and related data points relevant to the Company’s US insurance operations.
  • Develop and assess key performance and risk indicators to proactively monitor and inform the key operation and compliance activities undertaken by the Company’s US insurance operations and compliance staff.
  • Provide assistance and support to prepare the CCO to present to various boards, committees, senior management, and provide high-level analysis in support.
  • Member of Global Compliance Senior Leadership Team and contributor to building a global compliance program fit for purpose and size and risk profile of Sompo.
  • Build positive working relationships with other key control functions and Senior Leadership, business heads, across North America.
  • Provide implementation support to the business units and other departments to become compliant and ensure the company remains compliant.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of experience of financial services experience, preferably with insurers catering to the commercial property & casualty industry.
  • Strong legal, compliance, and / or regulatory background and experience at large carrier(s) that are global or large in size.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and ability to pivot and change priorities collaboratively.
  • Experience managing people and high-level projects, preferably implementing corporate compliance programs or processes.
  • Experience with board presentations, interacting with senior management, and ability to convey key compliance and regulatory, and reputational, risks.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory authorities, market conduct examinations, enforcement proceedings, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills, attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Excellent project management skills, well organized, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced collaborative work environment and manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure.
  • A high-level of intellectual, professional and interpersonal agility and flexibility, combined with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Team oriented and able to work collaboratively and effectively with business clients and other legal department members across different geographies and cultures.
  • Professional demeanor and team player with high degree of confidentiality.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, ability to build trust and confidence.
  • Willingness to work until the assignment is professionally complete and strong commitment to excellent work product.

Salary Range : $200,000 $275,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
