CONSUMER PROTECTION SECTION
DUTIES : Provide litigation and investigative support to attorneys in the Charitable Solicitations and Deceptive Conduct Unit, and the rest of the Consumer Protection Section as needed.
Manage documents and other evidence obtained from consumers, witnesses, targets, defendants, and third parties, including Bates-stamping, indexing, reviewing, coding, scanning, copying, and filing.
Assist in preparation of responses to discovery requests. Conduct telephone interviews of consumers and other witnesses;
draft memoranda documenting interviews; and draft affidavits for consumer witnesses. Assist in preparation for hearings and trials, including exhibits, witness subpoenas, and witness and trial notebooks.
Conduct public, government, and proprietary records searches to locate witnesses and obtain information regarding investigative targets or defendants.
Manage investigation and litigation files, including entry of information into case management system, calculation of litigation deadlines, and maintenance of pleadings index and other case files.
Handle distribution of restitution to consumers, including mailing of letters and checks, locating missing consumers, reviewing compliance reports, and working with third-party administrators.
Monitor and summarize multistate working group conference calls.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS : Competent working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management systems.
Position requires well-developed written and oral communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to work independently and as a team member, and the ability to organize and analyze large quantities of written and verbal information.
Candidate must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and to adjust priorities without close supervision.
Litigation paralegal experience of 5 to 10 years is preferred. A bachelor’s degree or a paralegal certificate is required.
However, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria.
Candidates also should be able to interact effectively with a diverse workforce and the general public. Proficiency using personal computers is required, and a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, cite-checking, and legal search engines is preferred.
