The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Rehabilitation Therapies is seeking a Rehabilitation Assistant (Behavioral Health COTA) to perform prescribed rehabilitation treatments primarily in an acute care setting specializing in treatment of patients with psychological and behavioral conditions.
- Carry out and progress treatment plans under the direction of the Occupational Therapist
- Instruct patients in ADL training, modification, and adaptive techniques.
- Facilitate group interventions utilizing activity-based therapy to implement coping and stress management strategies.
- Ensure patient safety at all times during rehabilitation sessions.
- Continuously evaluate the patients' response to rehabilitation interventions
- Implement treatment modifications as needed.
- Make necessary adjustments to activity and use of equipment to promote maximum safety, comfort and effectiveness.
- Complete occupational therapy documentation in the medical record within the prescribed timelines
- Provide oversight and direction to rehabilitation aides.
- Instruct and evaluate occupational therapy assistant students.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- An Associate Arts degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program or completion of the requirements leading to educational exemption as defined by the Iowa Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy Examiners is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Certifications
License in accord with the Iowa Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy Examiners is required.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working in an acute care hospital setting with patients who have cognitive / neurolgical, psychological and / or behavioral disorders.
- Crisis intervention training or experience
- Experience working on a multidisciplinary team.
- Behavioral characteristics and attitudes that contribute to a positive work environment.
- Works effectively with the supervising occupational therapists
- Effectively manages difficult and / or medically complex patients.
- Demonstrated effort to enhance one's own knowledge, skills and abilities.
