The Vocational Counselor provides vocational services through coordination with the referral source, client, and others with the goal being the client's timely acceptance of or return to gainful employment.
The Vocational Counselor interviews and evaluates the client to determine the degree of eligibility of and feasibility for vocational services with specifically identified interventions.
This position determines suitable job goals consistent with the clients' interests, aptitudes and physical limitations and pursues opportunities to match the client with the most compatible goal following specific intervention(s).
This position also provides or oversees placement opportunities with and for the client following intervention and preparation.
Additionally, this position seeks opportunities within the community to locate clients who may benefit from and meet eligibility standards for workforce development programs.
This is a temporary position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Evaluate job seekers for employment compatibility assessing skills, qualifications, capabilities, limitations and behavioral characteristics
- Counsel job seekers on possible career and employment options, providing recommendations and guidance based on their individual assessment
- Develop individualized plans for job seekers to obtain training & education (if applicable) and provide a clear pathway to progress towards suitable employment opportunities while overcoming barriers that may hinder that goal
- Inform job seekers about program requirements and possible employment outcomes after services
- Market / develop potential employers to enhance job placement opportunities for clients while mutually meeting shortage needs of employers
- Market social service agencies to identify people in need of available service to increase applicant pool
- Document all case activity in files
- Complete ongoing educational requirements as required by certifying entities
- Maintain average caseload of 40 participants for bi-monthly participant only contacts (at a minimum) ranging from 2 hours or .
30 minutes by in-person meeting, phone or email depending upon the phase of the program or needs of the participant. Communicate via telephone and email as well as in person meetings
- Schedule and carry out appointments with client, employers, training providers, support service providers as necessary
- Maintain consistent contact with other case parties depending upon the phase of the individual client's plan or need for intervention during the duration of the educational (work experience, OJT, short-term or long-term) program
- May be required to attend committee meetings, participate in customer service activities, present instructional programs, administer vocational testing and review results, perform on-site job analyses, job placement, oversee job seeking skills workshop, inform employees of rights as part of a mass lay-off, and perform labor market research to support compatible job goal selection toward successful RTW
- Drive Employment and Wage outcomes based upon plan of service and specific interventions
- Requires regular and consistent attendance
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations during work hours in conjunction with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS :
- Effective multi-tasking skills in a high-volume, fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Ability to interface with and guide applicants, laid-off workers, educational representatives, small / large employer groups, training providers, government representatives, potential funding sources and potential referral sources as well as co-workers

- Ability to present to large groups and provide impactful instruction, service or intervention
- Ability to effectively instruct / lead individuals as well as small to large groups
- Ability to diffuse and redirect escalating behavior
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :
- Bachelor's degree in psychology, human resources, vocational rehabilitation, sociology or social work, or a related field from an accredited College or University with coursework in counseling theory, job placement, occupational information, personal and vocational adjustment
- Preferred certification as a Career Development Facilitator (GCDF), National Workforce Development Professional (NAWDP), or Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).
- Knowledge of government based work programs such as Workforce Development Workers Compensation preferred
PAY RANGE :
CorVel uses a market based approach to pay and our salary ranges may vary depending on your location. Pay rates are established taking into account the following factors : federal, state, and local minimum wage requirements, the geographic location differential, job-related skills, experience, qualifications, internal employee equity, and market conditions.
Our ranges may be modified at any time.
For leveled roles (I, II, III, Senior, Lead, etc.) new hires may be slotted into a different level, either up or down, based on assessment during interview process taking into consideration experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.
The level may impact the salary range and these adjustments would be clarified during the offer process.
Pay Range : $44,021 $70,806
