Title : Medication Administration Assistant (Medication Aide)
General Summary :
Under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse, prepares, administers and records select oral, nasal, transdermal, inhalant and ophthalmic scheduled and PRN medications to residents.
Perform regular CNA duties when not assigned to medication administration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Administers scheduled medication prescribed for routine administration according to established facility medication administration policies and procedures.
Complies with the resident Bill of Rights.
Reports to unit nurse when coming on duty and going off duty. Obtains assignment and specified directions from the nurse.
Report to unit nurse any physical and emotional change in resident status immediately.
Takes and records vital signs and glucometer checks as directed and in conjunction with prescribed medication therapy. Reports to unit nurse the readings obtained.
Transcribes parameters (weight, I & O, B / P) onto TAR or MAR from CNA assignment sheets, reporting significant changes to the unit nurse.
Participates and / or attends as required all in services provided for employees as appropriate to the job classification.
Works effectively and cooperatively as a team member with nursing staff.
This position involves being assigned to any nursing unit / wing.
When splitting duties between two units, will distribute time based on respective Unit’s needs. Or, if necessary, as directed by the Supervisor or House Charge.
Expected to participate with resident care in between medication administration duties and as directed by the Supervisor, House Charge or unit nurse.
Provides proper notification for absences in accordance with facility policy.
This position reports to the unit nurse.
Education Requirements & Qualifications :
QUALIFICATIONS :
Has successfully completed a State of Wisconsin approved medication administration assistant course. Has demonstrated ability to measure and record vital signs and blood glucometer checks.
JOB STANDARDS :
- Knowledge of medication actions, medication effects on body systems and side effects, especially in relation to the geriatric resident.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and / or written instructions.
- Ability to administer medications to elderly, confused and emotionally upset residents in a safe and competent manner and ability to accurately document this activity.
- Ability to recognize change in resident condition and ability to communicate the change to the unit nurse.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents and staff.
- Present a professional image.
