Overview

S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals.
Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The security division of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Department of Public Safety concentrates on the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff within the hospital and on campus.
The department provides field officers, bike and mobile patrol, investigators, and a communication unit for monitoring alarm systems and dispatching officers to service and emergency calls.
All officers are required to complete annual training that focuses on health care security.
Role Purpose
Oversight of strategy and operations of public safety / access control at the academic hospitals (BJH, SLCH, BJHWC) and their off-site locations (CAM-S, OC, CSCCs, PCDC).
Responsibilities include public safety, telecommunications, parking, security technology, and mail services. Responsible for championing pro-active relations, managing conflict and / or change towards productive outcomes.
Builds collaborative teams that strive for continuous improvement and business results that meet / exceed every customer’s expectations.
Accountable for developing and preparing budgets, policies / procedures and goals and objectives. Manages or assists with managing staffing and certifications of officers.
Reports to the Vice President of Operations and Support Services - Academic Campus.
Responsibilities
Manages individual(s) including but not limited to : onboarding and hiring, training, workload management & performance evaluations, conducting professional development plans as needed.
Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet / support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
- Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and / or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
- Monitors department practices and indicators to identify problems and opportunities to continually improve and increase the effectiveness and satisfaction ratings of public safety, security, training and telecommunications, parking, access systems and mail service.
- Participates in selecting outside sources and vendors for needed services.
- Researches, evaluates, selects and implements systems which improve the efficiency of department operations on the academic campus.
- Develops and implements strategies to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors in each of the academic facilities.
