What you will do :

Health & Safety Management (Regional level responsibility- Swedish Hospital based)

  • Oversee the assessment of environmental, health and safety risks throughout the Entity as part of the EH&S team and establish best practices and process-improvement to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Routinely monitor employee injury data for designated region. Recognize and anticipate hazardous or unsafe practices. Meet with leadership routinely to recommend and develop measures for ensuring a safe work environment.

Provides professional and consultative support to assure that safety policies and work practices are implemented and sustained.

Drive continual EH&S improvement organization-wide through development and enhancement of programs and standards, training, and best practices.

Develop and manage systems and practices that encourage continual improvement. (Regional level responsibility)

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify high risk operations and determine alternative course of action, develop mitigation plans and provide safe recommendations.
  • Works collaboratively with others, including but not limited to Infection Control, Facilities, Housekeeping, Construction, Occupational Health, Public Safety and Risk Management personnel to effectively identify and resolve safety issues.

Participate on associated Councils / committees as assigned based upon System level responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance (Regional level responsibility- Swedish hospital based)

Reviews and implements programs to ensure compliance with agency occupational safety and health standards as applicable.

Agencies requirements include but are not limited to OSHA, TJC, IDPH - Life Safety as applicable.

  • Interprets, evaluates and manages organizational compliance with applicable occupational safety and life safety codes.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements policy on environmental health & safety; develops accident prevention and loss control systems and programs.
  • Collects and analyzes data from environmental tours to identify trends and potential safety hazards and shares the information with system leaders and committees to assure perpetual readiness for and compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Serve as liaison and lead regulatory compliance inspections with multiple regulatory agencies including Occupational Safety & Health Administration, Department of Transportation, Joint Commission, and State and Federal Environmental Protection Agency, IDPH, IEMA, and leading regulatory compliance inspections and communication.

Monitor status complete of areas identified for improvement to ensure closure

Emergency Management (Entity responsibility- Swedish hospital)

  • Manages and coordinates emergency response efforts within the cycle of disaster planning, including mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Maintains committee membership and active participation as appropriate within the corporation and with community agencies as evidenced by meeting attendance and participation.
  • Lead the implementation of new emergency management initiatives as directed by System director.
  • Coordinate emergency drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of response plans.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for emergency situations, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct post-incident reviews to identify lessons learned and improve emergency preparedness.
  • Assists with the generation of After-Action responses and IDPH Preparedness grant narrative reporting, as required.
  • Maintains appropriately functioning supplies and equipment required for efficient management of the emergency preparedness and response process

Environment of Care and Targeted Safety Committee Leadership (System level responsibility)

  • Support Regional Environment of Care program encompassing general safety, hazardous materials / waste management, public safety, life / fire safety, utilities management, medical equipment management, emergency preparedness, with direct oversight of one or more chapters related to the assigned System level program specific leadership responsibilities.
  • Chair assigned system action committees and sub-committees in support of the System Safety Council to identify and build system alignment and standard practice / policy in support of key team member, environmental and / or life safety factors in accordance with organizational needs and agency requirements.
  • Provide technical support to Emergency Management Committee.

System Program leadership (System level responsibility)

Act as System lead and subject matter expert related to specific element(s) of the overarching Environmental Health & Safety / EOC program.

These specific areas may include industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, waste management / sustainability, injury prevention (blood body fluid, workplace violence, slip falls), safety training and promotion, human factors / safe patient handling / ergonomics, etc.)

  • Lead related complex improvement projects involving internal departments and external partners by engaging stakeholders, managing work plans following established continual improvement process, and delivering measurable results.
  • Participates in System Safety Council as appropriate to represent designated System element(s) of the overarching Environmental Health & Safety / EOC program.
  • Responsible for System level contracts (and contractors, as applicable) based upon designated System program responsibilities (ie.

integrated waste mgmt, chemical management / safety data sheet, patient handling and office furniture, online / in person training vendors).

Manages and monitors performance and driving efficiencies, responsible for addressing issues and seeking ongoing continual improvement.

Information, Collection, and Evaluation Systems (System level responsibility)

  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports to Safety Committee and System Safety Council reflecting program activity and effectiveness as measured through established key performance indicators.
  • Prepare summary reports for committee / focus team review as defined in charter(s). Submit recommendation for minimizing or eliminating risk factors contributing to recurrence.

  • Bachelor's degree, in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field
  • Experience :
  • Five (5) years' work experience in environmental health & safety, emergency management or related field.
  • Three years (3) of demonstrated progressive leadership experience in the area of Environmental Health and Safety; and Joint Commission (or regulatory equivalent) Environment of Care and Life Safety requirements for a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Training / Certification :
  • Completion of FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800 or ability to complete them within 90 days of hire.
  • Unique or Preferred Skills :
  • Understand OSHA, EPA, Joint Commission, IDPH, local, state, and other federal regulations and policies pertaining to environmental health and safety and emergency management practices.
  • Ability to develop and document investigation of incidents and processes and to write safety and health policies.
  • Experience and success in preparing, coordinating and executing effective training and education to the adult learner.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
