As part of the career counseling team, the Career Counselor will meet regularly with students and alumni regarding all aspects of career development and job search.

This includes using techniques and presenting resources appropriate for each client’s stage in the career development process;

administering and interpreting career assessments; assisting in the pursuit of internships, full-time positions, service opportunities, and graduate / professional school admittance.

Will also coordinate implementation of career programming efforts, including career education and networking programs, career fairs, and presentation requests.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide individual career counseling to an average of 15 students / alumni per week via in-person, phone, and e-mail appointments, addressing topics such as :

  • Career and major exploration
  • Resume, cover letter, and personal statement writing.
  • Job and internship search
  • Graduate school planning
  • Networking strategies

2. Engage in campus outreach to build and maintain partnerships with Marquette faculty, staff, departments, and colleges

  • Engage with faculty, staff, departments, and colleges within certain majors of focus needing additional support resulting in potential creation or enhancement of resources, services, and / or programs.
  • Foster an intentionally inclusive environment to support all student populations and address historical equity gaps experienced by underserved groups

3. Research, develop, and deliver presentations requested for classes, events, faculty, and student organizations covering various career topics

4. Supervise student employees to provide essential services and perform additional administrative support for office

5. Plan career-related programs for students with alumni and / or employer participation; Collaborate with faculty / staff on program needs;

Career program duties can include organizational and planning tasks, day-of implementation, program assessment, and program wrap-up reports

6. Serve as Counselor on Duty on a rotating basis to contribute to a welcoming environment in the Lemonis Center for Student Success, answer urgent career questions, and provide backup drop-in coverage

7. Teach career exploration course for first- and second-year undergraduate students

8. Participate in professional development opportunities to be well-informed regarding current career counseling, employment, and diversity and equity topics

9. Interact with employers at conferences, networking events, and meetings to develop mutually beneficial professional relationships with the end goal of connecting students to career opportunities

10. Assist in maintenance of resources, short-term projects, and administrative duties. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum of a Master’s degree in student affairs, counseling, or related field.

A minimum of 2 years previous experience during or after graduate school in career counseling or a related field.

Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively with others in a team setting through shared responsibility, empathy, and respect;

seek and appreciate the viewpoints of those from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions, and lifestyles.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. An active listener with ability to ask appropriate questions and uncover needs.

Accuracy and attention to detail and the maintenance of confidentiality when accessing privileged information.

Exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues, synthesize information, make decisions, and solve problems. The ability to think critically and strategically to develop original ideas and innovative solutions.

Demonstrate integrity, resilience, accountability, and ethical behavior; the ability to take initiative, maintain effective work habits (prioritize, plan and manage work) to produce high quality results and project a professional presence.

Availability for required occasional evenings and weekends Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Qualified to interpret Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory and / or CliftonStrengths.

Global Career Development Facilitator or Certified Career Services Provider credential.

Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Experience in a college career center setting.

Understanding of student development and career development theories.

Experience coordinating programs and events.

Knowledge of and ability to effectively use helping skills in individual career counseling appointments.

Ability to use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Ability to learn SharePoint; Elevate; Qualtrics; D2L; Smart Classroom technology; and Handshake (online career platform) including troubleshoot and / or report problems, make system updates, and teach others how to use system.
