VCU is seeking a qualified applicant to lead a team of network engineers who primarily oversee the VCU data network for its data centers.

In addition to managing staff and complex network devices, this position will be critical in exploring and implementing ways to automate and streamline routine and complex processes.

VCU operates and administers a Cisco MPLS network on Monroe Park and VCUHS campuses which consists of 6600+ devices, including switches, routers, and wireless access points.

The University is in the process of turning up a brand new primarily data center, which is located on campus, and will be supported by Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).

Position reports directly to the Deputy Director of Infrastructure Services. While this position is hybrid, the ability to work on site as necessary is required.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing efficient, reliable, and secure network infrastructure for all campus and off-campus connected locations and will work closely with a team of network engineers in a hands-on technical environment.

The network team operates a wide variety of technologies, including routers, switches, wireless access points, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, video surveillance, VoIP network, and multiple network monitoring solutions.

Minimal Qualifications :

  • College degree in Information Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Deep technical knowledge of core networking technologies, including MPLS, LAN, NGFW, Network Load Balancer, and routing and switching from Cisco.
  • Experience with Palo Firewalls and F5 Big IP a plus
  • Strong knowledge of network monitoring tools offered by SolarWinds
  • Strong understanding of IP address and DNS management via industry-leading DDI solution providers such as Infoblox, BlueCat, and EfficientIP.
  • Strong desired knowledge of Software Defined Network infrastructure such as Cisco ACI
  • Must have a strong understanding of firewalls and, in particular, multi-context firewalls
  • Must have a good knowledge of SSL VPN technology
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to work flexible hours and occasional work outside of standard business hours
  • Must have a strong understanding of automation technologies such as Python and Ansible and desired hands-on experience with automating tasks for Palo Alto Firewalls and F5 Big IP.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of code revision control systems such as Git
  • Experience with team communication and collaboration tools such as Google Workspace and Slack
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications :

Desired Cisco Certifications such as CCNA and above.
