Description
Under general supervision, enforces animal ordinances and impounds stray animals within the Town of Flower Mound.
Examples of Duties
- Enforces animal regulations, rabies control, and licensing requirements.
- Patrols the Town and impounds stray, unlicensed, or injured animals.
- Destroys, in a humane manner, any animal which poses an imminent danger to a person or property, or one deemed injured, sick, or diseased beyond recovery, or as otherwise determined necessary by management.
- Enforces Town Animal Control ordinances as well as federal and state laws regarding animals and cruelty to animals.
- Removes deceased animals from roadways.
- Operates, inspects, cleans, and reports any problems with department vehicles.
- Requires direct handling of wildlife and livestock.
- Assists in the disposal of deceased animals.
- Investigates animal complaints and reports of animal bites.
- Maintains accurate records of Animal Services division activities.
- Issues citations and files complaints on violations.
- Responds to court requests and testifies in court, as necessary.
- Processes head shipments for rabies testing.
- Assists with the cleaning and maintaining of animal habitats.
- Assists with animal adoptions and special events.
- Assists in locating lost pets.
- Educates the public on animal care and control.
- Recommends programs, policies, and procedures, as necessary.
- Ensures correct preparation and maintenance of reports and records.
- Informs supervisor of all work-related activities.
- Follows personnel and department policies and procedures, including administrative orders.
- Works shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Works after-hours emergency response on a rotating basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS :
- A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
- Possession of a valid state-issued driver's license with a driving record in compliance with Town policy.
W ORK EXPERIENCE :
Six months of animal control experience or experience in a field that requires daily handling of animals preferred.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).
Desired Qualifications
Animal Control Officer Basic certification through the Texas Department of State and Health Services preferred.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :
- General working knowledge of animal control regulations, to include chemical compounds and animal behavior.
- Sufficient skills in mathematics.
- Ability to deal effectively, efficiently, and in a pleasant manner with distraught and / or irate citizens.
- Ability to make competent decisions under stress.
- Ability to follow directions verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work shifts include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work and respond to after hours emergencies.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES :

- Ability to lift, push, pull, and drag equipment and animals in excess of 100 lbs. several times per day, to include disposal of animals.
- Ability to work indoors, outdoors, in confined spaces, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and muddy terrains.
- Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions, to include inclement weather, fume, dust / mist, noxious odors, chemical, solid waste substances, animal feces, urine, saliva, and in the sight of blood.
- Exposure to and handling of insects, noxious plants, snakes, assorted wildlife, vicious animals, and livestock.
- Ability to read, write, see, talk, hear, climb, crawl, kneel, run, sit, squat, bend, stand, and stoop.
- Ability to walk up to ten (10) miles per day while pursuing animals and carrying equipment.
