Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We're Looking For :

Iridium is seeking a motivated and experienced Telecommunications System Architect to join our team. Iridium's Telecommunications System Architect is responsible for defining the overall architecture and roadmap of the Iridium Gateway, which provides commercial service for Iridium's satellite network.

This includes coordinating all changes in the Gateway, including technological evolution, new service developments and sustaining activities.

The Telecommunications System Architect defines multi-year evolution plans and and works with stakeholders to align the roadmap with budget constraints and the needs of the business.

In this role, you will work with technology leaders who are subject matter experts for the network elements, as well as with senior management in engineering, operations, lines of business and finance to develop and align the roadmap.

A key element of the job's charter is to manage the lifecycle and evolution of Iridium's services that are delivered from the Gateway.

What You'll Do :

Build a deep and broad understanding of the Gateway infrastructure and services

  • Establish strategic goals for the evolution of the Gateway architecture, in coordination with technology leaders and senior management and ensure investments in the Gateway implement those goals over time
  • Develop and maintain the Gateway roadmap covering new developments, enhancements to existing services, and technology refreshes.

This includes recommending adoption of new technologies and operational models, as well as build / buy decisions

  • Build strong relationships with all stakeholders to ensure alignment
  • Work closely with System Engineering on the lifecycle of Gateway services and establish the process, documentation and reporting to ensure consistency in how each service is evolved.
  • Provide guidance on budget and resource priorities on an annual and quarterly basis
  • Publish and present the roadmap regularly. Participate in Executive Leadership meetings, Monthly Operations Review, Technology Reviews, Network Architecture Council, and various network change control boards
  • Provide initial feasibility studies and early scoping of new developments as they pertain to the Gateway
  • Oversee project reviews and technical inter-exchange meetings in support of Gateway development activities and Gateway purchasing decisions
  • Work closely with Gateway Engineering and development partners to coordinate their efforts

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You'll Need to Succeed :

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science / Engineering
  • 15+ years of full-time experience in an engineering or technical leadership role
  • Excellent leadership qualities and the ability to facilitate collaboration across multiple departments.
  • Ability to organize, lead and align cross-functional groups
  • Can effectively communicate technology vision and details to many audiences. Must be comfortable in different settings from technology brainstorming sessions to formal executive presentations
  • Must possess a strategic mindset and balance long term vision with technical and business constraints
  • Ability to confidently lead discussions, make decisions, and respond to difficult situations
  • Have a strong sense of urgency in driving projects to completion and be motivated to achieve outcomes and results

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table :

  • Hardware and software development of wireless communications network equipment, new products, or services
  • Previous experience in a senior or executive management role with supervisory, budgetary and scheduling responsibilities
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of communications systems and protocols such as cellular, 3GPP 4G / 5G standards, IP Networking, etc.

We'll also need you to :

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Be a US Citizen that is eligible for security clearance

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer.

The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
