Position Description : Assistant City Attorney / Prosecutor

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the City Attorney, performs responsible and complex legal casework in the office of the City Attorney.
Responsibilities may include preparing and conducting criminal / civil prosecutions of violations of applicable state and city laws.
Expected to apply professional judgment in providing legal advice and support, and in the preparation and presentation of cases.
Requires complex problem solving and skillful legal strategy.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Assists in drafting and reviewing contracts, briefs, pleadings, memorandums, ordinances, resolutions, permits, letters, or other documents necessary to the function of the City
- Acts as legal counsel to city boards, commissions, or the City Council as assigned
- Provides advice and assistance to all City departments and divisions on a variety of matters ranging from employment related issues to land use projects
- Prepares and conducts criminal / civil prosecutions as assigned, including representing the City in administrative proceedings, in the City's justice court, or in the Salt Lake County Third District Court as assigned
- Performs other functions within the Office of the City Attorney as may be assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Must be a licensed member of the Utah State Bar in good standing admitted to practice law in the State of Utah.
Prefer a minimum of 7 years municipal experience as an attorney.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of federal, state, and municipal law, with an emphasis on municipal law; knowledge of city departments and their legal needs.
- Skill in writing with clarity and precision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENING
Due to the nature of this position, the applicant must successfully pass an initial criminal background check, subsequent checks and continuously meet the requirements of the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
