DISTRICT TRUANCY INTERVENTIONIST

JOB DESCRIPTION
The District Truancy Interventionist for the Norwalk Public Schools shall be responsible for providing direct care services to chronically absent students.
Under the Supervision of the Education Administrator for School Counseling and Social Services K-12, District Truancy Interventionists shall work with the School Attendance Teams to provide in-home support to chronically absent students to support their re-engagement with the school community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives regarding School Attendance
- Provide Home Visits for wellness checks and report findings to the School Attendance Teams
- Provide in-home support to the student and family to encourage the student to re-engage in the school program via daily interventions
- Assist in identifying those factors in a child's environment (home, school, and community) that impact upon their ability to attend school and report such factors to the school attendance team
- Communicate with the family to assess problems affecting the child's school attendance
- Assist in providing resources to alleviate family stress to enable children's school attendance
- Implement behavioral programs / plans developed by schools to address truancy
- Assist in consultation with the school attendance team with identifying resources to support the implementation of Section 504 plans and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals
- Act as a liaison between the school and community agencies, such as public and private welfare, psychiatric, and law enforcement agencies.
Serves as liaison between District, school, and home to explain legal procedures involving truancy
- Investigate non-attendance to ensure the legality of absence excuses
- Represent the District in all SARB business
- Prepare all necessary attendance reports, documents related to SARB business and coordinate attendance-related contracts as requested by the school or District administration.
- Enforce the District's rules and regulations related to school attendance areas
- Maintain attendance reporting for the elementary, middle, and high schools
- Respond to emails and voicemails
- Monitors student attendance to report to the Education Administrator of School Counseling and Social Services K-12
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Education Administrator of School Counseling and Social Services K-12
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work professionally and effectively with others
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information at all times
- Organizational and problem-solving skills
- Oversees the student check-in / check-out and tardy recording process at all schools
- Responsible for informing school sites of changes to policies
QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Education, Psychology, Public Health or related field
- Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults in an educational or social service setting
- Fluency in Spanish preferred
- Flexile / schedule determined by Education Administrator of School Counseling and Social Services and may require weekend, evening, after school, or before school hours.
