Position Description :
The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has a long-standing history of providing outstanding care for our patients, conducting leading-edge, collaborative research, and educating the next generation of ophthalmologists and vision science researchers.
The department is currently seeking an academically oriented optometrist to join a team of established providers. Appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or full Professor is available and commensurate with experience.
The position entails clinical activity at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics main campus, Iowa River Landing Ambulatory site as well as possible outreach sites.
Opportunities are available for teaching residents and medical students in the clinic and in small group classes. As with all members of the faculty, expectations include maintaining high clinical and ethical standards that are carried into the decision-making process.
Adhering to compliance measures, establishing, and promoting an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication, and fostering a high level of patient and staff satisfaction.
The department currently supports 18 residents and 6 first year interns in the Ophthalmology training program, as well as fellowships in Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Inherited eye disorders, Glaucoma, Neuro Ophthalmology, Cornea, Oculoplastics and Surgical and Medical Retina.
The department has multiple providers conducting clinical research strongly supported by a trials team and institutional resources.
In addition to the trials team, the University of Iowa Institute for Vision Research is home to a world class team of scientist aimed at curing blindness.

Education Requirement :
Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from a school or College of Optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education
Required Qualifications :
- Two (2) or more years of experience in contact lens and / or vision rehabilitation and primary eye care
- Completion of a 1-year optometric residency or commensurate experience
- Demonstrated commitment to clinical care and teaching in an academic setting
- Must be eligible to work in the US.
Certifications :
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Iowa.
- Fellowship in or be eligible for fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry. Fellowship is required within 3 years of accepting a faculty position.
Desirable Qualifications :
- Previous publications in journals and involvement in optometric professional education.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
