Job Summary :
Provides support to the pathologists by performing frozen sections to include slide staining, equipment maintenance, etc.
Performs variety of duties to support the Histology department such as specimen tracking, slide distribution, slide and block filing etc.
The HLA position must possesses strong attention to detail and has the ability to multi task in high stress environment.
Essential Responsibilities :
This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership.
Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs.
Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
- Scans surgical slides into CoPath AB&T to match with corresponding pathologist.
- Performs frozen sections, manually stains and coverslips frozen section slides, touch preps and FNA slides.
- Unpack, set up, code and accession and tracks tissue samples to be grossed by a pathologist or grossing technician.
- Slide / block filing, storage and disposal.
- Prepares tissues for send outs if additional testing is needed.
- Interacts effectively with the supervisor, co-workers, pathologists and other Kaiser Permanente staff in a courteous, professional and helpful manner that supports best practices in patient care.
- Maintains document control according to CAP regulations.
- Performs maintenance on all Histology equipment as needed.
- Work with bodily fluids, human tissues and biohazard chemicals.
- Answers and assists with routine telephone inquiries in a courteous and professional manner. Assists with ordering and maintaining supplies.
- Successfully completes the required laboratory orientation, training and on-going education as assigned.
- Conducts him / herself in accordance with the principles of the Labor Management Partnership and the Bedrock Cultural Elements.
- Other duties as assigned by laboratory manager.
Basic Qualifications : Experience
Minimum six (6) months experience working in a histology and / or cytology laboratory, preparing and handling specimens.
Education
High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements :
- Basic knowledge of Biology, Anatomy and Medical Terminology.
- Basic computer navigation and keyboard proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Minimum one (1) year experience in a histology and / or cytology laboratory.
- College biology educational track.
