Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment Mechanical Engineer to work in our Reactor Project Engineering department.

Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our (Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off. INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment.

MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

Responsibilities Include : You will provide applied mechanical engineering for the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment project at Idaho National Laboratory.

Apply engineering principles to the solution of mechanical problems as they relate to nuclear reactor installation, removal and fuel handling activities.

Mechanical problems are those that are related to the motion and dynamics of heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials required to design nuclear reactors and systems that function in a safe and reliable, efficient, and predictable manner.

Must help design systems following relevant national agreement codes and standards.

  • Work with a diverse team of scientists and engineers on the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment.
  • Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach and applying digital engineering tools for tracking requirements and design parameters.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to determine a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.
  • Maintain familiarity with and technical understanding of codes and standards applicable to the discipline.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design responsibilities are maintained.
  • Oversee or otherwise ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done observing the design.
  • Develop the assigned systems / equipment. Perform calculations related to the specifications of project, including analysis and evaluation of location, material resources, and mechanical design.
  • Provide solutions to technical problems and recommendations for improvements in production activities. This may include planning, design, and constructing manufacturing facilities and similar structures or production processes.
  • Apply engineering principles to monitor and evaluate condition and operational performance of plant systems related to mechanical engineering;

recommend repair standards and procedures, identify vendor data, replacement, and spare parts; coordinate resources and priorities necessary to attain or maintain the appropriate system condition.

  • Lead the development of new projects at the INL in area of specialty, including the development of proposals and business plans.
  • Develop, ensure adequacy of, and maintain configuration management of the technical baseline. Establish and maintain configuration management of assigned system.

Maintain cognizance of system / equipment status and performance through review of operating logs and observation of operations.

  • Ensure consistency in operation characteristics among applicable documents such as drawings, technical manuals, operating instructions, emergency operating procedures.
  • Work with other designers, customers, and analysts to develop experiment requirements, perform conceptual and final designs, follow all fabrication and inspection activities, lead experiment assembly activities, support installation and testing of experiments, and support development of integrated analyses to ensure that facility safety bases are met.
  • Lead the development of project specific documentation, such as calculations, analyses, and drawings that meet the engineering process requirements.

Check the engineering work performed by others.

Qualifications : Minimum Requirements :

  • Level 1 - Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering with 0 years experience or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Level 2 - Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering with 2+ years experience or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Relevant experience commensurate with level.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred :

Advanced degree in mechanical engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
