SCOPE OF POSITION :
Performs respiratory therapy to all patients, from neonate to geriatric. Responsible for performing pulmonary function diagnostic testing.
Documents according to department and Waterbury Health policies.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Administers prescribed respiratory care to all patients according to department policy and procedures.
- Provides monitoring and ventilation / airway management to patients requiring continuous invasive and non-invasive ventilation.
- Instructs patients and demonstrates breathing maneuvers to obtain optimal results.
- Performs standard diagnostic tests of lung function.
- Draws arterial blood gases.
- Monitors and documents patient care provided in electronic medical record.
- Participates in the Respiratory Assessment Program and performance improvement projects.
- Assists with bronchoscopies.
- Consults with physicians and nurses to modify therapy to provide optimal patient care.
- Ensures that equipment is clean and functioning properly.
- Educates patients and families regarding pulmonary disease processes, medications, and use of related equipment.
- Participates in annual Continuous Mechanical Ventilation and Neonatal Respiratory Care competencies.
- Maintain a current knowledge of respiratory care.
- Operates a variety of equipment and recording data. Maintains equipment following infection control procedures. Ensures availability by regularly troubleshooting equipment.
- Any other duties as required and necessary to the position.
REQUIREMENTS :
- Graduate of an approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
- CT State Respiratory Therapy license.
- Eligibility or registration from National Board for Respiratory Care.
- CPR certified from American Heart Association.
- Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to
- Waterbury Hospital procedures.
- Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
