SCOPE OF POSITION :

Performs respiratory therapy to all patients, from neonate to geriatric. Responsible for performing pulmonary function diagnostic testing.

Documents according to department and Waterbury Health policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Administers prescribed respiratory care to all patients according to department policy and procedures.
  • Provides monitoring and ventilation / airway management to patients requiring continuous invasive and non-invasive ventilation.
  • Instructs patients and demonstrates breathing maneuvers to obtain optimal results.
  • Performs standard diagnostic tests of lung function.
  • Draws arterial blood gases.
  • Monitors and documents patient care provided in electronic medical record.
  • Participates in the Respiratory Assessment Program and performance improvement projects.
  • Assists with bronchoscopies.
  • Consults with physicians and nurses to modify therapy to provide optimal patient care.
  • Ensures that equipment is clean and functioning properly.
  • Educates patients and families regarding pulmonary disease processes, medications, and use of related equipment.
  • Participates in annual Continuous Mechanical Ventilation and Neonatal Respiratory Care competencies.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of respiratory care.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and recording data. Maintains equipment following infection control procedures. Ensures availability by regularly troubleshooting equipment.
  • Any other duties as required and necessary to the position.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • CT State Respiratory Therapy license.
  • Eligibility or registration from National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • CPR certified from American Heart Association.
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to

  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
