Position Overview
The primary purpose and function of the Group Medical Director is to lead and manage the hospitals within their group and ensure the highest quality of medical care, unmatched client experience, associate and lead veterinarian engagement, and maximum productivity of the hospital team.
The Group Medical Director advocates for pets and their quality of life; builds a long-term relationship with the team and clients;
and educates clients and hospital teams on all aspects of pet health and the human-animal bond. The Group Medical Director partners with the Operations Advisor, Regional Vice President of Clinical Operations, support team, and Practice Managers to operate effective and productive hospital teams, ensure safe and engaging hospital environments, and improve the medical quality, client experience, and business performance of their hospitals.
Essential Responsibilities and Tasks :
The ratio of time spent on leadership and in role will vary depending on the hospital group situation and volume.
Leadership Responsibilities :
- Live and exemplify the Mission, Vision, and principles of United Veterinary Care.
- Partner with the Practice Manager to manage the hospital as role models and champions of United Veterinary Care’s brand to provide consistent high-quality care and unmatched client experience to the most pets and clients and to maximize efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Train the team on hospital guidelines and practices and supervise and train the team to ensure compliance.
- Oversee and train the team on professional, efficient, and unmatched client experience (lead by example), to include client education, preventive care, pet health needs, marketing campaigns, and effectively resolve client issues.
- Identify potential obstacles or opportunities and formulate solutions to remove barriers in operations that would impede the team from delivering excellent care and experience.
- Partner with the Regional Vice President of Clinical Operations (RVP CO), Operations Advisor (OA), Support Center, and individual Practice Managers to interview, select, train, develop, coach, mentor, provide feedback to, and if necessary, create / deliver performance improvement plans and terminate team members.
- Work with their individual Practice Managers to create training and development plans for associate and lead DVMs.
- Create opportunities to partner with the hospital team to provide avenues for open communication, feedback, and active problem solving for the hospital as a whole, and subsequently support and drive positive hospital culture.
- Develop annual planning, budgeting, and goals for hospital productivity levels for your hospital(s) in partnership with the Support team, OA, and hospital leadership.
- Provide effective communication between the hospital team, clients, PM, RVP CO, OA, and Support center teams.
- Provide training and support on UVC systems, technology, and support functions.
- Assess the resources (time, personnel, budget) at each hospital required for each task and prioritize tasks that align with available resources.
- Consider time-sensitive needs within the hospital group and prioritize the severity of needs while allocating team resources effectively and maintaining the ability to adjust priorities based on emerging needs or shifting circumstances.
- Prioritize tasks that mitigate critical risks or address issues with significant consequences either to individual hospitals or to UVC as a whole.
Functional Responsibilities :
- Establish trust and gain the confidence and compliance of clients through effectively delivering appropriate preventive care, performing complete diagnostic work-ups, developing thorough treatment plans, communicating home care instructions, and planning follow-up visits.
- Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plans to hospital team and clients.
- Build collaborative relationships, including a strong professional relationship with UVC team members, clients, and community.
- Lead the hospital team through the daily schedule and caseload, delegating tasks to the team and improving hospital efficiency.
- Work with the Practice Manager to ensure that all client concerns are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate integrity and ethics in all actions and behaviors.
Qualifications / Requirements :
- DVM / VMD required, MBA or other advanced degree, a plus.
- Veterinary License in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state veterinary board.
- Minimum 2 years of clinical experience required.
- 3-5 years coaching associate doctors.

- This is a multi-site leadership role with still a clinical component working in our clinics to lead by example.
- This is a FT role 4-5 days / week.
