Job Summary
The Cable Plant Technician plays an integral role in the Network Services team, collaborating with diverse and skilled members to solve multidimensional IT problems, enhance customer experience, and generate value for stakeholders.
Duties include the installation, maintenance, repair, and moderate upgrade of the network's physical cable infrastructure, such as fiber optic, copper and coaxial cables, and both inside-plant and outside-plant communication distribution systems.
The Cable Plant Technician is tasked with delivering and maintaining network installations, troubleshooting network issues, performing regular tests on infrastructure, and facilitating network upgrades to ensure optimal performance.
Moreover, the technician organizes daily service calls, maintains customer relationships, and provides solutions to network-related problems.
Adherence to both UCSF and industry standards is crucial in this role, including maintaining accurate documentation and facilitating the relocation, repair, and installation of indoor and outdoor cabling.
The Cable Plant Technician's role also involves basic troubleshooting and remediation of infrastructure equipment and services, and providing innovative solutions to meet the current and future network service needs of a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $180,000 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the UCSF network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work.
Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems.
They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols.
They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience / training in one or more of the following fields : computer science, computer information systems, etc.
- 2 years of experience working in information technology or higher education
- Knowledge of large-scale network implementations and upgrades, and installation of infrastructure cabling per industry standards and similar to UCSF standards.
- Knowledge of working on data center, network, or other enterprise-wide technical consolidations. Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network-related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
- Demonstrated experience working in confined spaces in accordance with all safety protocols and reading floor plans and site plans.
- Proficiency in technical documentation of troubleshooting procedures and solutions, and records of installations, repairs, and maintenance activities, including changes made to network infrastructure.
- Experience developing network flow diagrams, and with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio) and Adobe.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license.
- Demonstrated experience implementing a new design of a large-scale network infrastructure and troubleshooting copper / fiber cables used in voice and data systems, splicing and testing indoor and outdoor fiber and copper, and utilizing fiber, copper, and network testing tools.
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity, and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and cultivate a strong rapport with colleagues, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
- Experience developing and nurturing collaborative working relationships within a diverse team environment, fostering a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

- Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) Installer 1 and Installer 2
- CompTIA Network+
- Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
- Experience delivering reliable and quality network services within a higher education environment.
