Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the Director or designee, this position supports the mission of the University of Hawai i Manoa Counseling and Student Development Center (CSDC) in providing professional excellence in service delivery and high-quality ethical care via culturally competent mental health services to a wide range of university students.

The primary emphasis of the position is the provision of direct service to students which will account for no less than 65% time with program development, administration, professional development, scholarly activities / evaluation / research and service activities rounding out the faculty member’s work commitments.

Through our practitioner-scholar model, the Center’s specialist faculty promotes the development and expansion of scholarly activities that informs clinical practice, contributes to the specialty of collegiate mental health and benefits the broader field of psychology.

Collectively, these endeavors enhance students’ lives and promotes retention and graduation through social, personal, and academic growth.

The incumbent of this position will perform a wide range of complex clinical tasks including : Provide brief time-limited individual and group counseling services for psychological, academic, and career concerns.

Conduct phone screens and intake evaluations. Provide crisis interventions and urgent drop-in services. Clinical case management duties of complex client cases.

Crisis response, suicide assessment, intervention and postvention. Administer and interpret various assessment results (e.

g., CCAPS, MBTI, SCII, LD / ADHD, MMPI) and prepare assessment reports in a timely manner. The incumbent also participates in the APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology by providing individual clinical supervision, training and education.

Additional duties and responsibilities include : Develop and implement outreach activities, workshops, and programming. Provide faculty, staff and student consultations and training where appropriate and when requested.

Respond to campus requests for classroom presentations, talks, panels, information fairs, skills training, etc. Participate in Center, Division, and Campus-wide activities and programs including leadership in those programs where interest and expertise are present.

Respond to service requests for participation and contributions to programs and activities as appropriate. Engage in professional development through contributions and participation in CSDC staff development series and other professional activities.

This includes maintenance of appropriate state licensure and fulfillment of continuing education requirements. Other duties are assigned at the discretion of the Director.

While the majority of the duties / responsibilities occur during office hours, it is expected that the work of CSDC specialist faculty extends into evening and weekend hours.

In addition to the expectations highlighted above, the incumbent of the position is expected to : Demonstrate commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.

Act in a manner consistent with the APA Code of Ethics and state of Hawai i statutes and rules governing the practice of psychology.

Abide by established Center policy and procedures. Accept overall direction from the Director or designee and participate collegially in meetings, teams, and committees.

The successful candidate must demonstrate competence and have a strong interest in issues related to diversity, as this is a core value at CSDC.

This individual will work closely with Center staff as part of an integrated team as well as with other campus colleagues, thus strong teamwork skills are essential.

It is expected the specialist faculty member maintain active engagement with relevant local and national professional organizations, which includes, but is not limited to serving on regional and national committees and boards, presenting at conferences and sharing research, as well as planning and implementing professional development opportunities for CSDC faculty, staff, and trainees.

Assistant Specialist Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree from a college or university of recognized standing and additional 30 credits of graduate study in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program.
• Completion of a APPIC-affiliated doctoral internship in health service psychology.
• Licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in the State of Hawai i. Licensure will be attained within 18 months of start date or the clinician will be placed on a licensure attainment plan to achieve this requirement.

Depending on the circumstances, employment at CSDC may not be extended beyond the first contract renewal review period.)

Minimum of three years of professional clinical work experience, after the Master's Degree, in a university counseling center with an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology or equivalent mental health setting with an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology providing psychological direct services to young adults and adults.

Practicum training experiences do not qualify for this requirement. A doctoral internship in health service psychology may count as one year.)

• Demonstrated ability to competently evaluate and intervene with mental health related concerns in young adults and adults.
• Experience in providing mental health consultation to professional and non-professional colleagues as well as parents and other concerned parties.
• Evidence of strong skills in providing outreach on a variety of topics and prevention services related to the university population.
• Demonstrated proficiency in administering and interpreting various assessment results (e.g., CCAPS, MBTI, SCII, LD / ADHD, MMPI) and efficient production of assessment reports.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team-oriented environment, including psychologists, psychiatrists, professional support staff, and trainees.
• Demonstrated commitment and strong skills in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented and / or underserved population.
• Evidence of professional endeavors demonstrating achievement, scholarship, and service to the field of psychology in the promotion of the mental health and psychological well-being of students.

Associate Specialist Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a doctorate in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program.
• Completion of a doctoral internship in health service psychology
• Current licensure as a psychologist in at least one state, Hawai i license to be attained within six months of start date.
• Minimum of five years of professional clinical experience, at the Assistant Specialist level or equivalent mental health setting with an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology providing psychological direct services to young adults and adults.
• Evidence of strong skills in conducting brief psychotherapy.
• Evidence of strong skills in providing crisis intervention.
• Evidence of strong skills in the delivery of group counseling.
• Demonstrated ability to competently evaluate and intervene with mental health related concerns in young adults and adults.
