Reassignment : Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Public Health Specialist 1 or Trainee.
Transfer : Current New York State Department of Health employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Senior Sanitarian, Grade 18.
Preferred Qualifications : The preferred canidate will have experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards.
They will also have experience monitoring public health environmental hazards and developing methods to control or eliminate hazards or the spread of disease.
Duties Description Public Health Specialists enforce the provisions of New York State's Public Health Law (PHL) and other State and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to community environmental health, sanitation, and safety.
The incumbent will conduct on-site inspections to evaluate environmental health conditions and regulatory and code compliance to improve the health, safety, and well-being of individuals and the public.
Public Health Specialists in the Department's District Offices play a pivotal role in ensuring that environmental health facilities meet or exceed the standards set forth in various laws, regulations, and best public health practices.
The position will conduct inspections at food service establishments, children's camps, hotels / motels, etc.; conduct sanitary surveys;
review operation reports, sampling results, and compliance schedules; and responding to reports of possible contamination at regulated facilities.
The position will also preparation inspection reports and correspondence to operators citing deficiencies, and inform operators of corrective actions.
When necessary, the position may also prepare and present enforcement actions against facilities found in non-compliance.
Positions also educate operators, owners, and the general public regarding environmental health issues, and when necessary, provide training and technical assistance to facility owners or operators.
