Lead I&E Designer

Job Description and Qualifications

J H Operating Company, LLC, an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction firm supporting the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry, has an opening at our office in Baton Rouge for a Lead I&E Designer.

The Lead I&E Designer will be responsible for developing comprehensive electrical and instrumentation designs for large-scale oil and gas projects.

The position requires technical expertise, leadership, and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities across multiple projects.

These activities will support new capital industrial infrastructure projects such as large central gathering stations, oil terminals, and saltwater disposals.

The role and skill set would be key to expanding JH’s services to the midstream and downstream sectors.

The position will report to James Prosser, Design Supervisor.

Primary responsibilities include :

• Develop and design detailed electrical and instrumentation layouts, wiring diagrams, and schematics for industrial projects.
• Prepare drawings, layouts, specifications, technical calculations, cost estimates, bills of materials, charts, and graphs.
• Implement PIP standards in a newly established design environment.
• Oversee and review all aspects of design work, including calculations, models, and drawings, ensuring quality, accuracy, and functionality.
• Conduct CAD administrative duties specific to AutoCAD Electrical (AutoCAD Plant 3D and BIM are managed by other teams).
• Lead continuous improvement efforts, providing feedback based on project experience.
• Mentor and train less experienced staff to enhance team capability and performance.
• Take on general project management duties when design responsibilities are not required.
• Collaborate with project teams to ensure seamless execution from design to completion.
• Work independently on complex problems, with minimal supervision, while ensuring all aspects of work meet project and industry standards.
• Adapt to project changes and evolving needs, maintaining flexibility and a solution-oriented approach.

QUALIFICATIONS : Required :

Required :

• Associate degree in an engineering or scientific discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in I&E design, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior role.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical.
• Extensive knowledge of NEC, ISA standards, and industry codes.
• Experience with PIP standards and leading complex design projects.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with a proven ability to manage teams.
• Experience in the oil and gas or heavy industrial sectors preferred.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to handle multiple projects while maintaining high-quality results.

Work Environment and Physical Demands :

• Ability to perform site walk-downs, which may involve climbing stairs and ladders to reach elevated platforms.
• Must occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Overtime may be necessary as workload dictates. This may include weekdays, weekends, and / or holidays.

Pay : $60.00 - $70.00 per hour
