Day Kimball Healthcare is hiring for a Pediatric Registered Nurse for the Full Time Day Shift job in Putnam, CT.

As the Pediatric Registered Nurse (RN), you will be responsible for diagnosing responses to actual or potential health problems and for providing basic emergent, supportive, and restorative care through use of the nursing process.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned responsibility.

Registered Nurse Job Responsibilities :

  • Systematically assesses the patient's physical, psychosocial, emotional, cultural, spiritual and discharge needs according to age and developmental level of the patient.
  • Utilizes effective oral and written communication skills to include completeness and accuracy of documentation.
  • Demonstrates accurate technical skill and operational knowledge of patient care equipment and procedure.
  • Evaluates the plan of care and reformulates the goals as necessary.
  • Develops and implements a plan of care for each patient.
  • Recognizes unsafe and life-threatening situations and intervenes appropriately.
  • Meets the physical demands of the position.
  • Demonstrates ability to cope with and function under stress.
  • Meets skill certification requirements for designated units.
  • Assesses the patient's physical and psychosocial needs for the purpose of establishing a nursing diagnosis, according to age and developmental level of the patient.

Includes discharge needs in the initial assessment.

  • Completes assessments utilizing basic interview and observational skills, and adds new information obtained on an ongoing basis.
  • Determines the presence, nature and priority of immediate patient problems.
  • Observes changes in physiological and emotional status and alters plan of care appropriately.
  • Re-assesses each assigned patient with appropriate frequency based on his / her condition.
  • Assesses and identifies appropriate learning needs according to age, developmental level, readiness and ability of the patient and family / significant other utilizing appropriate resources.
  • Identifies factors from the patient's history that may influence his ability to communicate and determines barriers to communication.
  • Develops, initiates and updates a plan of care for each assigned patient.
  • Incorporates physician’s orders and medical regimen into the plan of care.
  • Establishes realistic and measurable goals.
  • Includes patient and family / significant other in the planning process.
  • Initiates discharge planning in collaboration with the patient, family / significant other and appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Initiates appropriate nursing actions to provide for the basic biophysical, dietary, psychosocial, emotional, language, cultural and spiritual needs of the patient.
  • Provides patient and family / significant other teaching in preparation for discharge.
  • Supervises specific nursing actions delegated to other members of the health care team, considering the competence and limitations of the members of the health care team.
  • Intervenes appropriately in an emergency.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of principles of the following : fire safety, infection control, hazardous materials communication program, Standard Precautions, medication administration, patient care equipment, and general safety.
  • Identifies and provides for safety measures based on the needs, age and developmental level of each assigned patient, initiates corrective action as needed, documenting patient's response.
  • Trained and subsequently showed competence in responding to events where a patient is out of control or exhibiting inappropriate behavior.
  • Evaluates plan of care, identifying progress or lack of progress toward goals. Revises and updates NCP as patient needs change.
  • Includes the patient, his / her family and / or significant others, nursing staff and other health team members in the evaluation process.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate, collaborate and maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, families and members of the interdisciplinary health care team in providing care.
  • Maintains confidentiality in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrates competency in utilizing resources to accommodate cultural needs of patients and customers such as dietary, religious and language needs.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Identifies organizational and departmental structure, i.e., chain of Command, roles, function, and resources within the Nursing Department and DKH.
  • Demonstrates ability to incorporate consideration of acuity, skill mix, safety, needs of the unit and environment when making outpatient care assignments.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the patient care assignment on an ongoing basis and makes revisions in the assignment as indicated.
  • Classifies patients using the Nursing Department classification system.
  • Establishes priorities and manages assignments in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates professional and ethical behavior in working with patients, families and members of the health care team.
  • Respects the rights, privacy and property of others at all times.
  • Demonstrates efforts to maintain and improve job specific competencies. Incorporates new knowledge into practice.
  • Seeks educational opportunities congruent with the age and developmental levels of patient populations specific to one's own clinical nursing practice.

Six hours of continuing education is required annually.

  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for one's own clinical nursing practice.
  • Remains flexible in work schedule in order to provide the most effective and efficient support for the department and hospital mission.
  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with the Nursing Department mission, which is : Utilizing the nursing process, nursing provides individualized and comprehensive quality care directed toward health maintenance, health promotion, health restoration, or dignified death.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow appropriate procedures / production techniques related to the care of patients from 5 months to 105 years.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate and interact with patients and customers of all ages and cultures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all department and hospital policies relevant to the performance of their responsibilities.
  • Adheres to the OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens.
  • Identifies ethical dilemmas utilizing appropriate resources in assisting patients and their families in coping with problems.

Refers ethical dilemmas to the hospital Ethics Committee as appropriate.

  • Serves as an advocate for assigned patients and their families.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Registered Nurse Education and Experience Requirements :

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in the state of Connecticut required.
  • Current BLS / equivalent or within six months of hire required.
  • Achieve unit-specific competencies within the timeframe determined by the department required.
  • Graduate Nurse : verification of successful completion of a nursing program directly from the nursing education program, for example, via a list of recent graduates, or a copy of transcript or diploma provided by the Graduate Nurse.

Registered Nurse Physical Demands :

  • Heavy Work : Exerting 50-100 pounds of force occasionally (activity or condition exists up to one-third of the time).
  • Medium Work : Exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally (activity or condition exists up to one-third of the time) and / or 10-25 pounds of force frequently (activity or condition exists from one-third to two-thirds of the time).
